Kay had a passion for lifelong learning and a genuine sense of family, community, and church. Her commitment to education, community and people in this province demonstrated that individuals do make a difference. She began her teaching career in Florence Cape Breton in 1948. In her years in education, she was a classroom teacher, principal, curriculum consultant, and retiring as Inspector of Schools in Cape Breton. She retired from education in 1990 after 43 years.
She graduated from Holy Angels High in 1944. She went on to receive a Bachelor of Science from STFX (1947) and was recognized in the St. FX Hall of Honour in 2001. She worked with such associations as CWL, University Women, Associate CND, Board of Governors at St FX, Parish Council at Sacred Heart Church, Cape Breton transition House and the VON.
One of her favorite projects as a member of University Women was establishing libraries in small schools. She was a strong voice for projects such as encouraging home economics classes to be open to boys as well as establishing one of the first daycare centers in Sydney.
She has often been recognized as Kay Scott, her TV name. With Terry MacLellan, she was part of a live cooking school program on CJCB television in the late 60’s. She was the first to host an online talk show in Cape Breton providing helpful household hints.
Mom always had time for adventures, from small adventures like picnics on the ruins of Louisburg, swimming in the Mira, singsongs in the car, to bigger ones like taking nine children, all under 17 to Expo 67, sewing homemade outfits for us and collecting labels to purchase tickets to the events. There was lots of laughter and learning. Our hearts are sad to say goodbye but will always be comforted with smiles of many wonderful memories.
