With sadness and heavy hearts we announce the peaceful passing of Lorna Claire Mac Dougall (April 11, 1932 – July 16, 2022) at Hants Community Hospital, Windsor Nova Scotia, with her family at her side. Lorna was a long time resident of St. Peter’s Road, Sydney and a faithful member of St. Marguerite Bourgeoys Parish.
Born and raised on Park Street in Sydney, Lorna was the oldest of three children born to Greg and Dorothy (Fagan) McDougall.
Educated in Sydney, graduating from Holy Angels Convent and subsequently the Normal College in Truro, Nova Scotia. Lorna was a lifelong educator, teaching in Whitney Pier prior to moving to Park Jr. High in Sydney where she was the longtime Grade 8 math teacher.
Throughout her life Lorna was an active participant in the parish CWL, a card player who enjoyed many bridge games with the “ladies” of her club, both in their homes and “on the road”. Lorna enjoyed all aspects of curling whether participating or volunteering in some way. Lorna was an avid reader, crossword puzzle solver, card player, daily baker and constant supporter of Lauren and Peter. Lorna was known for her wit, fun spirit, and compassion, her genuine caring for others and as a quiet champion of the underdog.
Lorna and Sam were long time supporters of the Cape Breton Oilers and Cape Breton Screaming Eagles, thoroughly enjoying the interaction they experienced with their hockey-viewing neighbours. Lorna and Sam were also fortunate to spend many summers at their cottage in Big Pond Cape Breton, along with some “winter time” in Florida with very special friends.
Lorna (Nin) was predeceased by Sam, her best friend and husband of 63 years in May of this year; is survived by son Bryan, a wonderful devoted Nin to Lauren (Ryan) and Peter, and great-grandmother to Wyatt and Joshua. Lorna is also survived her brother John (Loyola) McDougall; her sister, Sister Ann Marie (CND) McDougall and sister-in-law Alma (Les) Turcotte; along with many devoted nieces and nephews. Special thanks to nieces Leslie, Debbie, Janice and Carol for their visits and attention to Sam and Lorna’s needs.
The family would like to express thanks to those caregivers and support workers from Shannex Parkland (Sydney) 3rd floor, Dykeland Lodge, Windsor NS, the doctors, nurses and support staff of Valley Regional Hospital and the Hants Community Hospital, along with the ever professional staff of EHS all of whom recently provided quality care for Lorna.
If inclined, in memory of Lorna, donations to Feed Nova Scotia, a local food bank or charity of ones choice can be made. Family flowers only.
