It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Margaret (Margie) Veronica Peters at the age of 90 years of Mira Road/Howie Center. She died at Harbourstone Enhanced Care, LeVatte’s Lane where she was a resident for 9 years.
Margie was born in Whitney Pier on April 2nd, 1920. She was the daughter of the late Patrick and Johanna Keough.
Surviving children include: Joanne (Bill Rogers); Michael (Kathy); Elizabeth (Frank Aikens); Bernard; Gregory (Marie).
Margaret’s family has grown over the years to include grandchildren-Arthur, Matthew, Yvette, and Tanya (children of Joanne and Bill), Michael (Lori Dawn) and Lisa (children of Michael and Kathy), Chris (Wendy), Raymond (Marni) and Glenn (children of Elizabeth and Frank), Joanna and Andrew (children of Greg and Marie). Margaret also had seven great-grandchildren, Victoria and Jason (children of Tanya) Jordan and Nathan (sons of Chris and Wendy), Cassie, Faith and Isabella, (Michael and Lori-Dawn), and one great-great-grandchild Mason.
She is survived by her sister-in-law Sadie Keough, wife of the late Billy Keough. Margaret is also survived by numerous special nieces and nephews.
She is also survived by her extended family at LeVatte’s Lane.
She was predeceased by her husband Austin Peters (1986). Margaret, who is the last person living in her immediate family, is the youngest of 6 children. She is predeceased by siblings: Mary (Joe MacNeil) Jenny, Loretta (Joe Doyle), Billy and Archie (Doddie) and also a niece, Marie Kennedy.
After Margaret finished her schooling, she went to work at Brown’s Jewelry Store and Crowell’s Ltd, jobs which she thoroughly enjoyed. Margaret was involved with “Home and School” on Mira Road, was a member of the Catholic Women’s League (CWL) at Immaculate Heart, and sang in the church choir at both Holy Redeemer and later at Immaculate Heart. Margaret is known for her wonderful homemade baking, and regularly had freshly baked treats waiting for her children when they arrived home from school. This tradition was passed on to her grandchildren, as they quickly learned to ask for Nannies’ “brown cookies”, who would willingly bake their favorite chocolate chip cookies.
A sincere thank you to the staff of Harbourstone Enhanced Care and a very, very special thanks to the staff at LeVatte’s Lane who gave ‘mom’ so much tender loving care over the past 9 years. Also, special thanks to Father Will MacPherson, Dr. Robert Cohen, Immaculate Heart CWL and everyone who helped in any way to care for our mother over the years.
Funeral services will be held at TW Curry Funeral Home Wednesday, September 22 from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm. A funeral mass to celebrate her life will be held Thursday, September 23 at 11 am in Lady of Fatima Church, Sydney River.
