Mary was born in Foot Cape, Inverness County. She was the daughter of Alexander (Curly Sandy) Beaton and Seonaid (Jessie) Beaton. Mary was educated in Strathlorne and Inverness and graduated from St. Joseph’s Hospital School of Nursing in Glace Bay in 1944. She pursued post graduate studies in surgical nursing at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto. She married Dr. Neil Francis (Bunny) Macneill in 1947. Mary was a generous person, an accomplished nurse, an incredible cook and an able debater. Her finest attribute was her devotion to her family. She will be deeply missed by her daughters Jane and Clare and sons Robert (Donna), Alan (Maureen), Sandy (Beverley) and Mark (Tanya). Mary had a special relationship with her 11 grandchildren, Meaghan MacSween, Sarah (MacLellan) Chiasson and Matthew MacLellan, Seonaid and Hilary Macneill, Dylan and Renee MacNeill, Liam and Meredith Macneill, Donovan and Skye Macneill. Mary was predeceased by her husband Bunny of 60 years, sisters Jane Kelly, Catherine MacLellan, Jessie Gillis and Kathleen Jameson Beaton and brothers John Malcolm, Angus and John Dan.
The family appreciates the quality of care provided by Dr. Jim MacKillop and Associates, the nursing staff at Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Palliative Care and the VON, and thanks to Mary’s long term personal caregivers especially Alfie Cole.
