It is with profound sadness that I announce the passing of my dear friend and steadfast companion of 42 years, Bob, who left us quietly in his sleep on February 23, 2024. He leaves behind a legacy of memories cherished by his companion Harriet; brother Emmett (Gayle); sister Gloria (Dave); nieces and nephews; and Harriet's children Robert, Van, Desiree, and Jayson.
Bob was a true Pier man, he was deeply connected to his roots and his community. He judged local weightlifting competitions and spent many hours mentoring young weightlifters and working out at Joe’s barn on Victoria Road. He loved to swim at Polar Bear Beach and preferred walking or biking to work over any other mode of transportation.
A dedicated stevedore, Bob’s presence at the wharf was a constant for 60 years and his face was familiar to many. Cruise ship crew members often waved and greeted him by name, and it was not uncommon for Bob to be invited aboard ice breakers for a hot meal and a chance to warm up during his night shifts.
Bob's love for the Legion, where he enjoyed the music and a beer mixed with tomato juice, was well known. He and Harriet explored the beautiful island of Cape Breton, spending countless hours camping and hiking, and occasionally encountering wildlife such as deer, moose, bears, foxes, and bobcats.
As Bob began to experience memory loss, he was cared for by many dedicated professionals. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to a personal caregiver who became a dear friend to Bob, and to the wonderful staff on the Fisherman’s Cove wing at Harbourstone Enhanced Care nursing home, where he was welcomed with kindness and patience.
“A special thank you also goes to Michelle, a caregiver who took the time to understand Bob. She penned a touching poem in his honour.
He watches me work, and follows me around, sometimes suggesting I might want to slow down.
Always wanting to help, with any task at hand whether lifting a heavy bag or just knowing the days plan.
Now his words are jumbled and often don't come out, so frustrating he just wants to shout.
Sometimes I'm mad, angry, worried and confused. So when I see your face, I feel safe in this sometimes scary place.
Always please and thank you. Respectful and kind, a nicer man you would be hard pressed to find.
Now so tired from a long and busy day, Bob approaches me with an outstretched hand, a smile on his face, he says to me thank you buddy for being so kind to me today.”
Bob was preceded in death by his mother, Marg Mulvaney (1999) and niece Lori-Ann Bird (2000). Bob has been cremated; a July service will be announced in the Cape Breton Post at a later date. Memories and condolences may be shared with the family by visiting www.twcurry.com. Donations can be made in Bob's memory to the Alzheimer's & Dementia Society.
Rest in peace, Bob, until we meet again.
