Sept. 11, 1928 – Nov. 1, 2014
Sara, the last of her family, was born in Sydney to Catherine (MacNeil) and Joseph MacKinnon. Raised on Bentinck Street with her five brothers; Neil, John, Donald, Allan, Gordon and three sisters; Mary, Nora (Power), Margaret (Cox) the family enjoyed every summer at ‘Coveside’ in Saint Andrews Channel. Mom’s husband of sixty-five years, Lou, predeceased her in July 2014.
Mom had an unwavering love and devotion for her family: sons; Louis (Joy), Brian (Dianne), daughter; Linda (Rick) Thibadeau, grandchildren; Justin, Chelsea, Kaitlyn, Glenn, Michael, Jennifer, Lindsay and Peter; great grandchildren, Brody Cole and Xavier Shaheen. Her extended family (in-laws, nephews, nieces, friends and neighbours) had the comfort of knowing they always could and often did, turn to Sara for an attentive ear or something more tangible (as required).
Mom’s working life began when her baby was a teen. She worked in the dietary departments at Point Edward Hospital, Cape Breton Hospital and finished at the Detox Center. Mom was also active in her religion through Holy Rosary C.W.L. and her community with Westside Legion Auxillary. Later in life she began painting (oil on canvas) with her friend and mentor, Chris Noseworthy. Mom had a burning fervor and pride in her Highlander Pioneer heritage (MacNeils and MacKinnons of Rear Big Pond). Testament to that fact-as children we knew the words to the song “Highland Man’s Toast” before the prayer ‘Our Father’.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will take place on Wednesday, November 5 from 2-4 & 7-9 pm at T.W.Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Thursday at 11 am at Holy Rosary Church with Rev. Dan MacInnis presiding.
