

It is with deep regret that we the Sisters of the Congregation of Notre Dame announce the passing of Sr. Evelyn McNeil on May 26, 2022 at the CND Health Care Centre in Sydney. Sr. Evelyn was born in New Waterford, NS on April 15, 1935. She was the daughter of the late John J. and Frances (Bruce) McNeil.
She entered the Congregation of Notre Dame in 1955 and was professed in 1957. That same year she began what was to be a fulfilling career in education, teaching in various communities in Nova Scotia, including New Glasgow, Antigonish, Truro, New Victoria, South Bar and Sydney. Her passion was teaching elementary grades, especially her years dedicated to enhancing the lives of special needs children. In 2011 Sr. Evelyn moved to Parkland Cape Breton where she resided until her health declined and in 2018 moved to the CND Health Centre.
Sr. Evelyn is survived by brothers Russell (Philomina), Robert (Patricia) and Richard, sisters; Joan Devine, Jeanette McCarron and numerous loving nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, by brother Roy (Margaret), brothers-in-law Leonard Devine, Rod McCarron and sister-in-law Queenie.
The joy Sr. Evelyn found in her family was evident to all, though a special place was held in her heart for her nephew Michael. Sr. Evelyn was a woman of deep faith possessing a compassionate spirit.
A visitation for Sr. Evelyn will be held Sunday May 29, 2022 from 6-8 pm at TW Curry Parkview Chapel with a prayer service at 7pm. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 am on Monday May 30, 2022 at St. Marguerite Bourgeoys Church with Fr. Bill Burke officiating, Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks. The service will be livestreamed for those unable to attend in person. Family requests that masks be worn for services.
