

70 – Eskasoni
Stephen Joseph Battiste, 70 of 77 Beach Road, Eskasoni, passed away suddenly on Sunday, December 26, 2010 at the QE II Hospital, Halifax.
Born in Heatherton, he was the son of the late Andrew and Mary (Sylliboy) Battiste.
He was a member of Holy Family parish, Eskasoni. Stephen was a very talented guitar player who sometimes was referred to as ‘Johnny Cash’. He was a carpenter and worked for a time on the Eskasoni Band Council Police Force in the late 70’s and early 80’s. Stephen also was active in Tae Kwon Do and drove the school bus for a period of time.
He is survived by his wife, the former Jean Peck, daughters Mary (Robert) Sylliboy; Jane Peck; Janet (Noel) Peck; sons, Glen Peck; Clayton (Elizabeth) Peck, all of Eskasoni; 18 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, several godchildren; brother Fred; Eskasoni; sisters Mrs. Mary Jane Dennis, Eskasoni; Mrs. Annie Brooks, Subenacadie.
He was predeceased by a grandson Gabriel, sisters Theresa, Helen, Mary Agnes and a brother William and by his ex wife Cecilia.
Visitation for the late Mr. Battiste will take place on Saturday, January 1, 2011 after 7 p.m. at the Gabriel Centre. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Monday, January 3 at 10:30 am at Holy Family Church with Rev. Martin MacDougall officiating. Interment in the parish cemetery.
