William “Bill” Arthur Bungay, 87 passed away quietly on Sunday September 20, 2020 at Harbourstone Enhanced Care. Bill, the fourth child of six, was born on November 26, 1932 in North Sydney to Ella (Daye) and Alfred Bungay. Bill spent his entire childhood in North Sydney where he played minor hockey, baseball and worked on various farms picking turnips and walking cows.
Bill began working for the provincial Attorney General’s office in 1967 and held various jobs until he retired in 1991 as the Prothonotary of the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia. The retirement option came unexpectedly for Bill and he was initially hesitant to ‘make the leap’. However, after a mere 7 days of adjustment, he embraced his new lifestyle. When Catherine retired 5 years later, the two became busier than ever.
Bill is predeceased by his parents, Ella and Alfred, his sister Aurelia, brothers Clayton and Lorne and second wife, Catherine. He is survived by Jean, the mother of his children; sons David (Charlene) Sydney, grand-daughter Samantha (Bob), Douglas (Richard) Halifax; Catherine’s children Brian (Cheryl) Saskatoon, SK. & children Moira and James; Brenda (Stephen) Sydney River & children Reilly, Corey and Kasey; Tim (Jackie) Bedford & children, Brigid, Liam, Owen, Ethan, Julia and Jack; Brother Sonny (Alfred) Sydney Mines, and; Sister Lila, Nanaimo, BC.
Bill loved Louie L’Amour novels, the Boston Bruins and curling. Among the things he was most proud was scoring an ‘8-Ender’ at Seaview Curling Club in North Sydney in 1971 and qualifying for the Provincial Tankard playdowns for the Brier. He and Catherine were actively involved in the Sydney Pensioners Club, where he and his buddies spent countless hours telling tall tales and peeling vegetables for their famous roast beef and turkey suppers. Bill was also an avid golfer and he golfed wherever, and whenever he could. He loved the Seaview Golf Course and was deeply in love with his golf cart. Low vision due to cataracts never slowed Bill’s golf game. Seeing where the ball went was never too much of a concern as he primarily made up most of his scores during this time.
Cremation has taken place. A small family service will take place at TW Curry Parkview Chapel on Thursday at 2pm with interment to follow in Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney.
