Alex lived a long life full of love and devotion to his family, church, friends and most of all his Lord & Savior, Jesus Christ.
He was a graduate of BB Comer High School and served his country faithfully during World War II. Alex married his high school sweetheart, Elsie and they recently celebrated their 79th wedding anniversary this past July. They had two beautiful daughters, Alexis and Ouida, four grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild with a second great-great scheduled to arrive in January 2023. He loved his family. He made sure that each person in his family knew how much he loved them; that he was praying for them and that they were special to him. He would encourage, pray, offer Godly advice, and sacrificially give to anyone in need.
Alex was a devoted husband and father. He grew up helping his family tend to his family’s farm. He would wake up very early every morning and help his father do all the morning chores before school. He loved his cows and growing a garden every year.
He worked for 40 years at Avondale Mills in which he retired as a Diesel Mechanic. He was very mechanically inclined and could fix just about anything.
He loved to go hunting. Every Saturday during hunting season, he would go out early to the hunting club. He loved to be outdoors.
Alex loved his church, Marble City Baptist. In 1961, he helped with the building plans and transition from the quarry to where it is located today. He served as a church deacon and Sunday School Superintendent for decades. He initiated and participated in weekly visitation and men’s prayer breakfasts. For many years, he was the one who would arrive to the church early to unlock the building, turn on the lights, heaters, air conditioners, set up what needed before everyone else arrived. He faithfully attended well into his 90’s until his health rendered him unable to attend church regularly.
Most of all, Alex loved his Lord Jesus Christ. God placed a deep desire in his heart to win the lost to Jesus. He boldly proclaimed Jesus to family, friends and strangers alike and would always invite them to church. Even in his very last days, he witnessed to those who were caring for him in the hospital. He didn’t just tell people about Jesus, he also lived a life as an example of a true, faithful servant of God. God’s love was evident in his heart not only through his words, but through his choices, his actions, his encouragement & kindness.
Our Papa was one of a kind. He is deeply loved and will be forever missed until we reunite with him again in Heaven. If you don’t know Jesus or have a church home, we would be happy to talk with you and invite you to Marble City Baptist Church.
Alex is survived by his wife, Elsie Stewart; his daughters Alexis Murzyn (Richard); and Ouida Rayfield; his grandchildren Amanda Coleman (Josh), Rosalind Wood (Andy), Gabriel Stewart (Crystal), and Alexa Todd (Wendell), his great grandchildren Morgan Redferin (Kyle), Madelynn Coleman, Evie Wood, Abigail Wood, Natalie Wood, Zander Stewart, Ellie Wood, and Jonathan Coleman and his great great grandchild Elsie Redferin.
