Childersburg, AL - It is with heavy hearts, we announce the death of Billy Joe (B.J.) Wood. He was born in Ashland, Alabama on October 6, 1932 and passed away on March 27th at the age of 89. The viewing will be 1 hour before the service. Funeral services will be Thursday, March 31, 2022 at 2:30 p.m. at Radney-Smith Chapel with Bro. Billy Paul Williams officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Sylacauga, AL.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Nellie Jo Campbell Wood; father, Young Blake Wood; mother, Mary Beatrice Wright Wood; and brother, James Byrd Wood.
He is survived by his wife, Peggy F. Wood; children, Lydia Elaine Wood Brooks, William Blake Wood (Cathye), Nelda Alvalene Wood Thomas; 5 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; and 2 great great-grandchildren.
B.J. was a member of Fayetteville Baptist Church where he served as Chairman of the board of Deacons for several years. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Fayetteville Fire Department. In 2005 he had a lucky number and was selected to go to Atlanta and throw a football for $1,000,000.00.
For a hobby he was a avid merchant token collector and served as Director of the Southeastern Token Society for several terms plus was also on the Board of Directors, and he was a chartered member of The American Legion Post 68 in Childersburg.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran and was selected as The Blue Jacket of the Month while being a member of the U.S. Navy Aircraft Squadron VU-4stationed in Chincoteague, VA.
He retired from Thompson-Weinman & Co. and Alabama Power Co. and Mazers.
Upon retirement he purchased a farm in Fayetteville where he enjoyed cutting, fluffing, raking, and bailing hay. He made some long lasting friends by selling good horse hay.
