Sylacauga, AL. - Funeral service for Harold Lloyd Wheeles, 87, will be Tuesday, June 29, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at Radney-Smith Chapel. Burial will be at Marble City Cemetery in Sylacauga, AL. Harold suffered a stroke on May 7 and after a few weeks of struggling, passed away in his sleep in hospice care.
He grew up in Clay County in the Lystra Community. Attended first grade at the Old School Building where his dad, James Arthur Wheeles was principal and second grade at another old time school in Mt Mariah. For the third through 12 grades he attended Ashland High School.
He served in the Air Force for four years and then graduated from Auburn University (then called Alabama Polytechnic Institute) in 1961 with a degree in Civil Engineering.
He worked for the E.I. Dupont Company for over 25 years, moving his family to many different towns around the United States to help build manufacturing plants. At these many locations he was active in various churches, PTA groups, Booster clubs & other community groups.
He retired in 1985 & returned to Sylacauga, AL where he continued his community activity work including many years on the Building & Grounds committee at the First Baptist Church in Sylacauga, AL.
He & his brother, Guy enjoyed working together on various projects of interest over the years.
He enjoyed time with his grandchildren! He loved working, fishing & hunting on the family land in Clay County. His major hobby in later years was genealogy & collecting family history.
Harold was married to Glenda Ree Bolton for 56 years. He is survived by his daughter, Joy Ree Price (Craig) of Dallas, TX, his son, Kerry Harold Wheeles of Birmingham, AL, six grandchildren: Brandon Price, Bailey Price, Bridget Price, Libby Wheeles, Grace Wheeles & Anna Wheeles. He is survived by his sister Wilma Washington of Tennessee & his brother Guy Wheeles of Georgia. Preceded in death were sisters, Gertrude Gaither (Pete) of Ashland, Evelyn Henry (Bill) of Montgomery, & Anita Upchurch of Ashland where her husband Johnny still resides. He is also preceded in death by his brother Ralph Wheeles of Maryland where his sister-in-law Carolyn still lives. He is also preceded in death by his brother-in-law Elwin Washington (Wilma's husband) & his sister-in-law, Mary Ann Wheeles (Guy's wife).
