

James Joseph (Joe) Grimes, 92, of Sylacauga, formerly of Bessemer, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on September 7, 2017. He was the loving husband of the late Bobbie (Ledbetter) Grimes for 58 years. Mr. Grimes was born in Bessemer on March 6, 1925, son of the late Robert and Mattie (Bell) Grimes. He proudly served as a Gunner’s Mate Second Class in the Navy during World War II, serving in the Atlantic, Pacific and Asiatic theaters from 1942-1945. Grimes, who was a true credit to “The Greatest Generation,” loved his family and his country, and will forever be a hero to those who loved him.
Mr. Grimes is survived by his daughter, Janet Crumpton of Sylacauga, three grandchildren: Lynne (Allen) Holmes, Tracey (Gregg) Thomas, Jim (Season) Crumpton, five great grandchildren: Gage Holmes, Ashlyn Holmes, Madison Holmes, Taylor Thomas, and Abbagail Crumpton all of Sylacauga; special niece: Bethany (George) Watkins, and a host of cherished nieces and nephews. Grimes is predeceased by brothers: Robert Grimes and Kenneth Grimes, sisters: Martha (Grimes) McCullers and Myra (Grimes) Ledbetter, and his precious great grandson, Jackson Joseph Thomas. Pallbearers will be Allen Holmes, Gage Holmes, Gregg Thomas, Taylor Thomas, Noble Naugle, and George Watkins. Family and friends are invited to pay their respects at the Curtis and Son Funeral Home (Sylacauga) on Saturday, September 9, from 5:00pm – 8:00pm. Graveside service will be held Sunday, September 10 at the Hopewell Road Church of God of Prophecy Cemetery in Bessemer at 2:00pm.
