Her family members waiting to greet her included her parents, Billy and Exa Chappell, her brothers, Fred, Milton, Henry, and I.D., and her sisters, Mary Alice, Hattie, and Willie Joe. Her survivors include her daughters, Amelia (David) Odom and Elicia (James) Polk, granddaughters, Elissa P. (Myles) Landers, Calah O. Mrs. Morris attended Gantts Quarry School and was a proud graduate of B.B. Comer Memorial High School, Class of 1942. Over the course of her lifetime, Mrs. Morris was employed at Baston Drug, Reynolds Bookkeeping Service, Peoples Bank, and Fairmont Reality. In 1962, she joined Spurgeon in the daily operation of Morris General Merchandise. They worked side-by-side until retirement, closing the store January 2, 1990. In the following years, they were active in various ministries of First Baptist Church of Sylacauga. Several times each week, you would find them visiting with residents of the Sylacauga nursing homes and visiting patients at Coosa Valley Medical Center. Minnie Ruth continued that ministry for several years following Spurgeon’s death in 2007. She used her bookkeeping and accounting talents and skills in various church positions, including serving a Treasurer of the Coosa River Baptist Association. She held that position for twenty-eight years. The family wishes to thank the staff of New Beacon Hospice, additional caregivers, and friends who assisted with our mission of caring of Mother in her home.
