
Savannah -Elizabeth Lee passed away July 9, 2011 at Habersham House under Hospice care. She was born September 9, 1922 in Screven County to John Henry and Lucy Boykin Lee. She graduated from the public schools of Savannah, GA. and attended Armstrong College. Moving to Washington, D.C. she worked for the British Air Commission for one year before starting her career with the Navy Department. In 1950, she accepted an offer to work in the pentagon building for the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations preparing presentation graphics and publications. She worked there until her early retirement in 1972.
Elizabeth and her mother, Lucy, returned to Georgia, making their home in Sylvan Heights in Sylvania, Georgia where she worked for several years as tax receiver in the Screven County Tax Commissioner’s Office.
She was a member of the Sylvania First United Methodist Church, became active in South Georgia Conferences Historical Society of the United Methodist Church holding several offices and served on the commission on Archives and History of the South Georgia Conference, U.M.C. She became a member of the Hunter’s Homemakers Club, started the Screven County Historical Society, and helped in the publication of the 100th anniversary Issue of “The Sylvania Telephone”. She was also a member of the D.A.R and served as Flag Chairman for many years and a member of the Adam Brinson 1 Chapter of the Colonial Dames 17 Century.
Elizabeth was appointed a Trustee on the Screven County Library Board by the Sylvania City Council and was elected to serve as a Trustee on the Screven-Jenkins Regional Library Board from 1984-2001. She also volunteered many long hours at the library working on History for the Georgia Room and the first library cookbook. She worked with “The Sylvania Telephone” on the publication of the Screven County History Book as family history editor.
Survivors include several cousins including Joe and Faye Markwalter of Savannah.
Graveside services will be Monday, 7/11/2011, at the Screven County Memorial Cemetery with the Rev. Mike Benson officiating.
Visitation will be at the cemetery.
