SPANKO - Leslie, Educator, mother, sister, daughter, fiercely loyal friend, and inexplicable Red Sox fan died unexpectedly yet peacefully in her sleep at home on December 13, 2013, too soon at 62. She spent more than three decades teaching English in the Northport public schools, touching the lives of her students and co-workers with her sharp wit and acid tongue. Generous with the ones she loved and devoted until the end, Leslie made an indelible mark on everyone she met. She is survived by her son, Alex Spanko, now of Boston, her brother and sister-in-law, Jeff Spanko and Ann Windreich, of San Jose, Calif, along, with their children Max and Laura Spanko; many other family members; and countless friends on Long Island and beyond. A celebration of Leslie's life will be held from 3pm to 8 pm. on Thursday, December 19 at American Legion Post 175, 68 Berry Hill Road, Syosset, NY 11791. All who loved her are welcome to attend. In lieu of flowrs, please send donations in Leslie's name to the National Stroke Association, 9707 E. Easter Lane, Suite B, Centennial, CO, 80122. In addition, please contact the United Teachers of Northport at 631-261-2000 for information about a forthcoming scholarship fund. And get your annual checkup. Do it for the ones you love.
