

Amanda (Newhouse) Carnie was born and reared in Washington, DC, daughter of Quentin and Berlene Newhouse, who predeceased her. She was a graduate of Marietta College (Ohio), and received her master’s degree from American University (Washington, DC) in vocal performance. She was gifted with an astounding lyric soprano voice. She sang with the Washington Opera, Kentucky Opera, Syracuse Opera, Lake George Opera, and the Oswego Opera. She performed solos for symphonies and oratorio societies in Central New York and in other states. She sang many solo concerts throughout New York State including at the Metropolitan in NYC. She also sang in many churches, and performed at weddings and funerals. She taught voice lessons privately for many years, and taught vocal performance at Colgate University, Oswego University, Syracuse University, and Cazenovia College. She was the Music Director at St. Daniel Catholic Church for twenty years. She touched many people by her gentle and affirming presence. She was always generous and gracious to everyone. Amanda was a person of great faith and devotion to her Lord. Her legacy of selfless love will remain in those she knew.
She is survived by her husband, David E. Carnie; three children, David, Matthew, and Angelica; two grandchildren, David and Dominic and their mother, Maggie; sister, Eleanor Newhouse Graves; brother, Quentin (Siriat) Newhouse; brothers-in-law, Robert (Mary Jane) Carnie and Roderick (Michele) Carnie; her friend, Elizabeth Moldenhauer (Sandy) who lovingly cared for her during her illness. There are many other people who loved her and are considered family, too numerous to name. They are also included.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday 11:30 a.m. at FARONE & SON FUNERAL HOME and 12:10 p.m. at St. Daniels Church, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Burial will follow in Assumption Cemetery. Calling hours will be held on Thursday from 4-7 p.m. at the funeral home, 1500 Park Street, Syracuse.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be submitted to St. Daniels Catholic Church for a scholarship in her name.
