I am so blessed to have been mentored by Mark Wright during several years of writing cultural grants for the Town of Schroeppel.  I have learned so much from his positive example and his passion for the arts and people.  I have no doubt that Mark lives on in everyone that has had the good fortune to have known him.  And I know Mark also lives on in all the arts projects he has nurtured over the years in Central New York. Mark was a great man who will be remembered fondly.

I first met Mark while losing my step-dad to cancer, flying in from Montana.  I couldn't imagine a better friend appearing, like a guardian angel willing to drive my mom hours down to Philly, squeeze my shoulder, hold my hand while I cried. He was like an instant uncle. In the intervening years, I have been so blessed to get to know him and develop a good friendship with him.  He is a fixture at our house and my family and I will miss him dearly.  Rarely do we find such a sweet, patient, encouraging, warm-hearted soul to be with.  His generosity, encouragement and perspective have been of immense value.  I always felt better about leaving my mom, Marcie, after each visit knowing she had a friend like Mark constantly around.  Reading the entries here and on http://www.cnyculture.com, I see, and am unsurprised, at how much he affected so many.  His reach, like his hugs, are vast and encompassing.  How blessed are we to have known him, whether for a while or forever.  You always feel good when Marky's around.  I am crushed at the prospect of him not being there in the kitchen when I return, and at not getting to visit me here in the west.  Although, I suppose he now has the best view of my mountains...

Mark, you will be desperately missed, and the world is a lesser place for you not being here, but thank you, thank you, for sharing yourself so freely and reminding us what true compassion and gentleness really is. Much love to you and the family and friends.

My time in Mark's orbit began and ended in junior and senior high shool.  I remember Mark as an important friend in school, although out of school we did not get together.  He was a big part of my evolving understanding at the time that race doesn't matter a whit in who your friends are.
My basic rememberance is of a gentle and caring person, even at that age; I am saddened to tears to learn of his passing.

We are so saddened to hear the news of Mark's passing.  My husband and I opened our business 3 years ago and one of the best things thus far that came out of it was meeting Mark and being blessed to have him as a friend and lover of the arts and music.  He got behind our dream and encouraged us in so many ways.  We cannot believe that we have shared our last cup of espresso with Mark but we believe and know this¦he is now home in heaven already gathering the panelists and encouraging the artisans and musicians alike to do what they do best!!!  Last year I received a grant through Mark and The Cultural Resource Council which involved students from 3 Cortland County Schools to do a mural, to go on the outside wall of our business,  which was representative of their community.  It was a wonderful and successful project that would not have been possible without a wonderful director like Mark. Therefore, our mural exhibit will be dedicated to Mark, a man whose hard work and dedication helped art and music all over Central New York stay alive and flourish.  

We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to his family. Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this time of loss and sadness.

Mark, as our friend you will always be in our hearts, as a mentor of the arts we will always remember your encouraging words, and every time Larry and I share an espresso we will think of you and we will miss you.  God Bless and Peace be with you.

Anyone who ever met Mark Wright was touched by him. Mark was always encouraging and helpful when it came to anything related to the arts. He was a wonderful individual.

Mark, your legacy will live on through the artistic endeavors of many people.  Anyone involved in art, dance, music, theater at one time or another has been influenced by your efforts.  You nurtured the art community and inspired artists from young to young at heart.  Thank you for all you have given Mark...you will be missed...your work will live on.  RIP Brother.

I first met Mark back in the late '80's at Salt City. He was so friendly and warm and already very dedicated to working with youth. Mark was one of a small cast in a Harry Chapin/Lies & Legends production many years ago at Appleseed Theater at Atonement Lutheran Church, where I had the pleasure of singing a duet with him ("A Better Place to Be"). He had a beautiful voice, a gentle manner, and a great sense of comedy -- demonstrated when he sang "30,000 Pounds of Bananas"! After that I worked with him at the Mental Health Association, where he was a Youth Programs coordinator, and then, most recently, through the Cultural Resources Council. In addition to his work there, he always seemed to have a new, original, and collaborative arts project going that was meaningful to him and the community. I'll miss you, Mark.

We were friends a long time ago and I felt lucky to find and follow you via CRC emails.  Rest in peace, dear brother and may God's blessings follow you into heaven.  You will be missed and revered as an iconic figure in so many lives.

Mark, you are leaving us much too soon!  You've made Syracuse a better place by your help and advocacy for the arts, the artists, and our youth.  Sincere condolences to your family.  Rest in Peace - you're missed here!

Mark's help was wonderful; he'll be missed by many artists and arts organizations in Oswego County (including us at the Oswego Film Group).

I met Mark just a few short months ago.  What a dedicated, knowledgeable and helpful person!.  It was easy to see that Mark never stopped teaching; never stopped giving.....

My deepest condolences to Mark's family and friends. Mark graduated from Nottingham HS two years before me with my sister, Doris. Mark was a very well respected man in the CNY community and he will be missed.

I'm very sorry to hear of Mark's passing.  I've attended several of his grant workshops.  He was very enthusiastic about the arts and its impact on the community.  He will be missed.

I remember Mark from High School and saw him about year ago at the Metro. I am sadded to hear of his passing.  He was a very  nice and respectable  person.  He will be truly missed.  My sincere condolences to his family.

Mark was such an amazing art activist!  He always returned my calls about my son Vincent's artwork and tried to connect us with grants and art contests...so sad to hear that he is no longer among us.  I will never forget his kindness to me...my deepest sympathy to his close friends and family, such a terrible loss to everyone.

Oh heart, if one should say to you that the soul perishes like the body, answer that the flower withers, but the seed remains.

To the Remarkable Family, Cherished Friends and Business and Art Community:

Mark was my closest and dearest friend and I was honored to be called trusted friend.  I will miss our cups of tea, long talks, visits to Artrage and running around town like two crazy people with our hair on fire.  Mark was the single most caring person I have ever known.  When my own family lost a beloved member, he was there for me and all of my children - although he had also lost a dear friend, his concerns were for our needs and our spirits.  I will always be grateful for that. 

The Syracuse community knows how loving and caring and giving he was.  But, I want the family to know that he talked about you constantly.  I feel like I know all of you - brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews.  He was so proud of you all.  And he was very proud of his heritage and told many stories of your ancestors, right up to his beloved nieces and nephews.  He told wonderful stories of your mother and he held her in the highest regard.  He told stories of himself as a young boy, growing up in the University area and I was pleased to be able to meet some of his old friends at the Wescott Street Fair this year. 

There are no words to express how much I will miss my friend.  Revelation 21:4 tells us that in Heaven "He (God) will wipe away every tear from their eyes.  There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away".   God must have needed him more.

As President of Syracuse Friends of Chamber Music, and on my own behalf, I mourn the death and celebrate the life and good works of Mark Wright.  He contributed so much to the health and vitality of the arts in the Syracuse area.  We will miss him.

I have worked with Mark for many years as the grants person of the Syracuse Friends of Chamber Music.  He was always particularly helpful and understanding in personal relations.  And when working with a disparate group, he was always considerate of the individual needs as well as passing on general information for the group.  I know that the attention he paid to the cultural needs of the community will be missed by his passing.  SFCM offers its condolances to his family and friends.
