Florence Elaine Young, who loved to be called “Flo” by her close friends, and “Nana Flo” by her grandchildren, departed her loving family on December 27th, 2022 at 9:54pm with her daughter Lorri at her side. Florence lived a full life of love, compassion and serving others.
Florence was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, on December 8th, 1934 to Ella Mae Bevis, and Frederick Stuart Bevis. Florence grew up on a farm with her five siblings Wilfred, Charles, Bob, Rosemary, and Barbara. She loved to share fond memories of feeding the chickens and milking the cows.
Florence graduated from Warren Central High School with the class of 1952 in Indianapolis. Florence worked for Naval Avionics and the local telephone company. She loved babysitting her nieces and nephews. (Arite, Arlene, Rob, Ron, Kathy, Mike and Dottie)
Florence married Leonard Young on February 16, 1962. The couple had many travels as Leonard’s career was in the military. They were stationed in Taiwan, Republic of China. Florence taught English and was a member of the Military Wives Club. She enjoyed planning and attending social events. On August 25th, 1962 they adopted Lorri Lynn Young. This was the “extra luggage” that they brought back to the United States. Florence and Leonard settled in Cookson, Oklahoma. Here they raised their daughter and resided for many decades. Florence’s husband Leo passed in 1998.
In her career, Florence worked for the VA Medical Hospital in Muskogee, Oklahoma.
During her almost three decades of service, she made a positive impact on the lives of those she served. Florence retired in 2001. She continued to volunteer when needed, and volunteered for the local food pantry. Florence was full of life, and always made others smile. You could always find her with a romance novel and a word search puzzle book. She also had a passion making ceramics and porcelain doll with her friends. Florence enjoyed traveling especially to Texas to see her grandchildren, Jessica and Andrew.
Florence was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Leo, and her bothers and sisters Barbara May Downey, Rosemary Phillips, John Robert Bevis, Charles Edward Bevis, and Wilfred Bevis.
Those left to cherish Florence’s memory include her daughter, Lorri and husband Joe Hillman of Carrollton, Texas. The love of her life was her two grandchildren, Jessica and Andrew Hillman, as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins and host of friends and loved ones.
A memorial service in honor of Florence will be held on January 6th, 2023 at 1:30pm at the Fort Gibson National Cemetery in Muskogee County, Oklahoma. The family invites friends and loved ones to gather to celebrate Florence’s beautiful life.
