From January 5th, 1937 to his passing on June 23rd, 2022, he traveled far, to learn, to work, to raise a family. From humble beginnings living out in the country, he was a Native Cherokee, and a complete fluent speaker, who was keen on having adventures such as trying to ride bulls or going on road trips. Johnny raised himself with a drive to find a career and build a life for himself. From small town life, he went on to Oklahoma State Tech in Okmulgee, Oklahoma where he learned the body and mechanic skills that served him well for the rest of his life.
He moved to Los Angeles after school, and within a short few years started his life long career at Greyhound Bus Lines. He worked there for 37 years before finally retiring in 2002. While in Los Angeles, he married the love of his life, Wanda Chalakee of Okmulgee, Oklahoma. Together they would have a home and raise two children, Larry and Kevin.
Among many things he enjoyed in life, from taking care of his own cars, playing guitar, and listening to Johnny Cash...One thing really stood out, he loved everything about Bull riding. There wasn't a single event on TV or in real life he skipped, no matter how difficult it might have been to get around later on, nothing could stop him.
Johnny will now rest beside his wife of 54 years, Wanda Louise Holcomb, who passed away in 2015. He is preceded in death by his parents, Maggie and Sam, and Brothers Dale and Bee Holcomb. He is survived by two sons, Larry Holcomb and Kevin Holcomb, as well as two sisters, Betsy Dickson and Ella Mae Leitka, plus one brother Eugene Holcomb. Beyond that are numerous cousins, friends and longtime coworkers.
Graveside services Saturday, July 16th, 2022 at 10:30am at Caney Cemetery in Tailholt with Reverend David Wiens officiating. Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.reedculver.com for the Holcomb family.
