

Memorial services for Marion Franklin Hicks will be held on Saturday, September 25, 2010 at 11:00 AM at the Cookson United Methodist Church with Reverend Marilynn Schellhamer officiating. Interment will be held on Tuesday, September 28, 2010 at 10:00 AM at Ft. Gibson National Cemetery with the United States Navy Honors Team. Honorary pallbearers for Marion include Tony Stevens, Danny Kokojan, Jim Chaffin and Bob Chaffin.
Marion F. Hicks was born on May 4, 1931 in Billings, OK the son of Henry Franklin and Alta Mae (Clark) Hicks. The family moved when Marion was twelve years old to Bethany, OK He attended school at Putnam City and graduated in 1949. Marion enrolled in the radio and television technical school in Oklahoma City. He opened a radio and television repair shop on Portland Avenue with his friend, S.J. Raidt. Within the year, the Korean Conflict caused the death of a Marine friend . Marion and S.J. were reservist in the Navy and decided to volunteer for active duty. Marion became a Fitter Pipe General Fireman in the damage control division on the USS Hanson. Marion was honorably discharged on August 1, 1954. Marion returned to Oklahoma and enrolled at Central State College in Edmond. He graduated in 1959 with a major in Industrial Arts and a minor in drafting and design. It was there he met the love of his life, Louise Thompson. They were married on January 20, 1955 at the campus chapel in Edmond. This union was blessed with a son Darcy, born February 17, 1956 and a daughter, Shelley, born May 17, 1958. In 1962, Marion went to work for John Keating, the owner of Topographic Engineering in Oklahoma City. The family resided on Norman Street in Warr Acres until 1973, when the family moved to the Cookson area and started the Marion F. Hicks and Associates Land Surveying Company and established and built the High View Mobil Home Park. Marion also served as the Secretary of the Oklahoma Draftsmen Association, as a two term President of the Oklahoma Society of Land Surveyors and was registered as Land Surveyor #527.
When he wasn’t working, Marion kept busy with OU football and golf. He loved geneology and worked at keeping in touch with his buddies from the Navy on the internet. A Methodist by faith, Marion was a member of the Cookson United Methodist Church. Marion was happy just to spend the day with his wife, children and grandson, Ryan Lee Pool. He dearly loved his family and they will greatly miss him as will his many friends and loved ones. Marion went to his eternal home in September 22, 2010 at his home with his family by his side. He was 79 years old.
Marion is preceded in death by his parents and his only brother Virgil L. Hicks.
Those left behind to cherish his memory include his loving wife, Louise, of the home in Cookson. His son, Darcy Hicks of Cookson and his daughter, Shelley Pool and husband Eddie of Dallas, TX survive him. His legacy lives on in his grandson, Ryan Lee Pool of Dallas, TX. His nephew Phillip Thompson of Houston, TX and niece Leslie Meyer of Katy, TX as well as his grand nephew Jake Thompson and grand niece Danielle Meyer also survive him. His family would like to acknowledge his special friends, Paula Miller and Annetta Beeler.
