

Mary Jo (Christie) Hammons was born August 27, 1950 in Tahlequah, OK, the daughter of Nannie (Christie) Dirteater. She was raised by her grandparents, George and Mary Christie, in the Briggs community and was the oldest of nine siblings. She attended school at Briggs. She went on to become a Home Health Aide for many years. In 1968, she met the love of her life, Ledon “Don” Eugene Hammons and the two were married on September 10, 1971 in Stilwell, OK. Their 52 years together was blessed with one son and one daughter, Mark and Teresa and a lifetime of memories. She was a wonderful mother and grandmother and adored time spent with her grandkids and great grandbabies. She loved to work in her flower garden, listen to country music, dance, shoot pool, visit with friends and family, but most of all, she treasured her trips to Branson and Eureka Springs with Kristin and Jane. She was called to her eternal rest on Wednesday, September 4, 2024 at her home with family by her side. She was 74 years old and will be greatly missed by all that knew and loved her.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Ledon “Don” Eugene Hammons, mother, Nannie Dirteater, grandparents, George and Mary Christie, great grandparents, Arch and Nannie Greece Christie, two brothers, Archie and Curtis Dirteater, two very special aunts, Martha Christie Crowder and opal McKee, her uncles, Johnny, Lincoln and Dan Christie, and one nephew, Billy ‘Bozo’ Davis.
Those left to remember her include one son, Mark Hammons and wife Melissa of Tahlequah, OK, one daughter, Teresa Schroeder of Oklahoma City, OK, two brothers, Leon Dirteater Jr. of Tahlequah, OK and Randy Dirteater of Hulbert, OK and four sisters, Linda Stacy and husband Bill of Briggs, OK, Brenda Grissom of Tahlequah, OK and Jane Davis of Tahlequah, OK and Donna Kingston. Her legacy lives on through her seven grandchildren, Kristin Hammons of Tahlequah, OK, Colton Schroeder and wife Monica of Smyrna, TN, Kenzy Hammons of Broken Arrow, OK, Nic Hammons of Tahlequah, OK, Keagan Hammons of Tahlequah, OK and Casey Dodd of Oklahoma City, OK, five great grandchildren, Kyler Hammons, Kade Pigeon, Kash Pigeon, Grayson Corntassel and Kamille Simmons as well as many nieces, nephews and a host of friends and loved ones.
Family and friends are welcome for a visitation on Monday, September 9, 2024 from 2:00pm until 4:00pm at Reed-Culver Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, September 10, 2024 at 10:00am at Reed-Culver Chapel with Pastor DJ McCarter officiating. She will be laid to rest at Cedar Tree Cemetery in Briggs.
Serving as pallbearers are Dustin Hamlett, Brogan Stopp, Clint Dirteater, Ryan Dirteater, Anthony Dirteater and Ray Hammons. Honorary pallbearers include Kade Pigeon, Grayson Corntassel, Tracy Hammons, Kash Pigeon and Kyler Hammons.
