Paula Sue Wood-Manes was born on January 9th, 1945 in Glendale, CA, the daughter of Paul and Esther (Heck) Wood. She joined a family with five siblings, Ruth Smith, Marie Layton, Jessie Shepler, Jack Hicks, and Barbara Strong. The family relocated to the Wichita, KS area and Paula attended school at Mayberry. It was in Wichita, KS that she was to meet and marry the love of her life, Barney Lee Delbert Manes. They were united in Holy Matrimony on March 11th, 1962 in Wichita. This union was blessed with four children, Delbert Lee, Penny Sue, Eddie James, and Nancy Joe. Paula worked her adult life as the Head Cook for the Hulbert School District. Barney and Paula enjoyed over thirty years of raising a wide variety of cattle, and spent many hours watching and tending the family herd. It was when she was not working you would find Paula showing her bowling prowess in Bowling League, raising all kinds of vegetables and lovely flowers in her gardens, doing a little crocheting and embroidery work, or heading out to do a little camping and fishing with her family. She enjoyed traveling and was excited about her adventures in Dollywood, TN, Branson, MO, and Six Flags. She was friendly, always speaking to people who spoke to her. Her smile was warm and genuine, and she made you feel welcome wherever she was. She was happy, cheerful, and just a little bit bashful. She was a Christian by faith and a long standing member of First Baptist Church of Hulbert, OK. They were as much of a family to Paula as her own. She served the Lord all of her days, working with the youth, working at Camp Kiamiche, cooking meals at the church too numerous to mention, teaching Vacation Bible School, singing in the choir, participating in the yearly Nativity Scene and making sure Barney was there too, and always in Sunday School. Her love of her family, children, and grandchildren, as well as her deep abiding faith in God, made it possible for her to endure the death of her daughter, Penny in 1998 and her son Delbert, in 2000. She became very ill and in spite of her illness, always tried to put a smile on the faces of those around her. The lord called this good and faithful servant home from her labors on Monday, February 9th, 2015 at her son’s home in Hulbert. Surrounded by those who knew and loved her best. Paula was 70 years old. She will remain forever in our hearts.
Paula is preceded in death by her parents, her son and daughter, one brother, Jackie Hicks, one grandchild, Robin Fairchild, and one great grandchild, Ethan Smith.
Those left to cherish her memory include her loving husband Barney Manes of the home in Hulbert, OK, two adored children, Eddie J. Manes and wife Michelle of Hulbert, OK and one daughter, Nancy Ulrich and husband Keith of Tahlequah, OK. She leaves four sisters, Ruth Smith of Wichita, KS, Marie Layton and companion Betty of Wichita, KS, Jessie Shepler and husband Dub of Graham, MO, and Barbara Strong and husband Bob of Fargo, OK.
Paula adored each and every one of her eleven grandchildren, Holly Coursey and husband Henry, Sheena Roberts and husband John, Sharla Wyman and husband Justin, Dalton “Blake” Manes, Shonda Ulrich and companion Fred, Randy Fairchild, Kole Ulrich, Stormey Manes and companion Joey, Braiden Manes, Brittany Manes, and Kyle Ulrich. Her legacy lives on in her eight great grandchildren, Hayley Smith, Clayton Roberts, Logan Smith, Kyzer Wyman, Thomas Manes, Karissa Manes, Keeton Wyman, and Cataleena Roberts, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends and loved ones.
