Randy James Welch, a loving father, son, brother, and outdoorsman, left an indelible mark on the hearts of all who knew him. His passing on January 19, 2025, in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, has left a void that can never be filled.
Born on August 17, 1962, in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, Randy grew up in Oaks, Oklahoma, where he graduated from Oaks High School around 1980. During his time in Oaks, Randy was an avid athlete, participating in all the sports available in the small town. This early passion for sports and competition stayed with him throughout his life. Randy spent his life embracing the simple joys and beauty of nature. His love for hunting and fishing was more than just a hobby – it was a way of life. He cherished every moment spent outdoors, whether it was reeling in a big catch or simply taking in the breathtaking views.
One of his most recent proudest moments was catching a catfish last fall, while on a fishing trip with his son Kody, a memory that will be etched in the heart of his son forever. Randy's infectious enthusiasm and love for life inspired those around him to appreciate the little things. He enjoyed exploring the wilderness, spotting deer, birds, and wildlife, and would often pick wildflowers to bring to those he cared about. Music was another passion that brought Randy joy. He loved listening to old country and classic rock ‘n’ roll music, and often reminiscing about his favorite TV shows, "Mash," "Bonanza," and "Gunsmoke."
A man of faith, Randy was a devoted Baptist. He also had a soft spot for OU football. Randy's love for traditional comfort food was unmatched. His favorite dishes included his momma's cooking, poke salad with scrambled eggs, mashed potatoes, biscuits, and gravy. Deer meat was another favorite, often served with a side of stories from his hunting adventures.
A devoted family man, Randy adored his loved ones and cherished every moment spent with them. His family was his rock, and he was theirs. He loved sharing stories and making memories with his family. He will be deeply missed by his mother, Doris Jean Welch; his son Kody James Welch of Oaks, Oklahoma; his daughter Karla Jaelynn Welch of Oaks, Oklahoma; and four grandchildren, Tamara Gilmore, Tristan Anglin, Ashlynn Welch, and Lawson Welch.
Randy was preceded in death by his grandparents, father, Louis Charles Welch, and two brothers, Charles David Welch, and Michael Dale Welch.
Though he may be gone, his memory will live on through the countless lives he touched. As we say goodbye to this incredible man, we take comfort in the memories we shared with him. Randy's happy-go-lucky spirit, joking nature, and loving heart will be deeply missed, but his legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched. His family takes comfort in the memories they shared with him and the knowledge that he is now at peace.
A Graveside Service will be held at 2 PM on Friday, January 24, 2025, at Oaks Cemetery in Oaks, Oklahoma, with Reverend David Wiens officiating.
