Vaulene Ann Watt began her life’s journey on the plains of McDonald, KS, the second daughter born to Charles (Chick) and Katherine (Katie) Brumm-Hubbard, on June 17th, 1929. There would be four children join this hard-working farm family. Life on a farm in the dirty thirties was anything but easy. There were cows to milk at the crack of dawn, chores without end, but always a great deal of love and loyalty. Growing up, she loved band and worked at Alfred Buck’s Drugstore for spending money. Upon graduating, she immediately was sent to Benkelman Hospital and studied nursing under Dr. Morehouse and Dr. Kenneth Stout through the Chicago School of Nursing. Following WWII, she would meet a handsome Police Officer, who did nightly rounds at the Morehouse Hospital. After several dates, they were married at the family farm in McDonald, KS, on July 15th, 1949, at 6:00 AM with a breakfast, just in time for Eddie to hurry off to jury duty in Lincoln. This began 70 years of love, laughter and fun. They raised a family of one son, Charles (Skeeter) and Melodye (Missy). Vaulene never stopped working; from Irelands Department Store to Robertsons Chevrolet as parts woman, to working at the Hester Home, to running Watts Daylight Donut on main street. When she wasn’t working, she was sewing dad’s uniforms, fixing the best meals in a three county area, mowing lawn, feeding anyone and everyone, planning family picnics, raising gardens, raising crops, teaching Sunday school, and making sure the flow of daily life went undisturbed. She served her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, from a very young age, and welcomed Him with open arms with her dying breath. Life wasn’t always perfect, but she was a firm believer in the love of God, family and country was all that was needed. Upon retirement, she moved to Park Hill, OK, where she helped with Little Lambs Preschool and assisted her daughter with everything from working at the funeral homes to all types of activity at St. Brigid Catholic Church, her home away from home, and First Lutheran Church in Tahlequah. Women like Vaulene are the reason so many of us were allowed to pursue our dreams, serve our communities and country, and have the family lives we’ve led. God called this marvel home on Saturday, February 7th, 2026 at her home with the family that loved her by her side. She was 96 years old and will be hearts of the household as long as we remember.
