Abha was born to Mr. Troilykonath Barua and Mrs. Gulapi Barua on September 1, 1937 in Nagaon, Assam State, India. Abha was a sportswoman who played badminton and carom at her school, winning the carom championship in grade school. She was a leader involved in NCC (similar to ROTC in the U.S.) and then as a teacher at Nowgong College in Assam. After marriage, Abha moved to the United States in 1968 where she began as a homemaker and had three children. She was quite social often having parties with hundreds of guests. Abha was also an avid traveler visiting most of the states of the U.S. as well as visiting many other countries during the summer vacation months. She remained a homemaker until her youngest was of school age and then began to teach at FAMU. She completed her Masters Degree in Social Work and then went to work for the Department of Revenue as a Corporate Tax Auditor and later as a Revenue Examiner. She balanced work, travel, taking care of her home, and family with a very active social life, welcoming newcomers to the town and making sure they were well-settled. She retired from the state after a stroke 16 years ago left her hemiplegic and confined to a wheelchair. Even wheelchair-bound she was still adventurous, traveling until the last.
Abha was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She was preceded in death last year by her husband Sunil B. Nath. She is survived by her two brothers: Digen Barua, and Ramdas Barua of Assam; three children: Bobby Nath, Nita Smith (wife of Douglas M. Smith), and Lipika Frith (wife of Jerry Frith) of Tallahassee; and four grandchildren: Kristopher Nath-Balding, Kendall Smith, Colin Smith, and Maya Grace Frith.
