Alexander John DeFrank, 22, of Tallahassee, FL, passed away Monday, May 11, 2020. Although he was born in Cuenca, Ecuador, he was as Southern as you can get. He was working to become an auto mechanic from Lively Technical College.

He loved everything about the outdoors, camping, hunting, and especially fishing. He earned the nickname “Catfish” in Cub Scouts when catching the only catfish on a campout and he never stopped fishing. The things he loved most were his family, friends, and his truck. He had a soft heart and was always willing to help other people no matter the time of day or circumstance. Animals loved him, and he loved them all from cats, to dogs, and even a panther.

Mechanics was a fast passion of his, and he never ceased to seize the opportunity to learn all he could about it. He would go to school for 32 hours a week, work for 20 hours a week, and you still could find him underneath his truck on a Sunday afternoon. His passions were reflected in his last two jobs in life, Oakwood Animal Hospital and Dale Earnhardt Chevrolet. When he wasn’t working on his truck, he loved to play video games on his computer or pull pranks on others. Alex loved country music, and you could always find him in a baseball cap which he loved dearly.

Alex was preceded in death by his grandparents, Bill and Virginia DeFrank, and Elvin Boles; and his uncle, Gerard DeFrank.

He is survived by his parents, Paul and Rebecca DeFrank; sister, Ashley DeFrank of Valdosta, GA; grandmother, Lavon Boles of Huntsville, AL, aunts, Sandra Swalley (Michael) of Richmond, VA, Linda DeFrank of Birmingham, AL, and Regina Paulette DeFrank of Tuscaloosa, AL; uncle, Michael DeFrank (Gina) of Trussville, AL; cousins, Matthew DeFrank of Charleston, SC, Dawn DeFrank of Birmingham, AL, Skylar DeFrank of Birmingham, AL, Adam Swalley and Justin Swalley (Genni) of Charleston, SC; and Logan Swalley of Charleston, SC.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully suggests a donation in Alex’s name to either Big Oak Ranch (bigoak.org and select donation or P.O. Box 507 Springville, AL 35146), An Open Door Adoption Agency (218 E Jackson St., Thomasville, GA 31792), and/or the Tallahassee Museum (3945 Museum Rd. Tallahassee, FL 32310).

We played CSGO way back in the day. I always wondered why he stopped hoping on. Randomly on June 27 I decided to check his profile and saw a link leading here. He was a blast to play games with, condolences to the family. May he rest in peace.

We were so disappointed and saddened to hear of your loss of Alex. Our oldest son, Austin, and Alex were classmates at Killearn Lakes and became fast friends and enjoyed getting together outside of school too. Alex always had a smile on his face and an adventurous spirit. He and Austin loved being outdoors. I wish we had not relocated for work as I know they would have enjoyed fishing, etc together. We will always have a special place in our hearts for Alex and the memories they shared. Our thoughts and prayers are with your family during the challenging times ahead as you continue to grieve his loss.

First and for most, may I offer my condolences to you. My son Hunter Baxley considered Alex to be his best friend & his favorite fishing buddy. Alex came to our house many times with Hunter and a boat in tow heading to the river. That seemed to be his favorite thing to do. Alex was very respectful very nice and I know that you will always be honored to have had him as your son.
Recently, my son got engaged on April 18 and asked your son to be his best man and my son was honored that he said yes. We will always remember him in our hearts as he rests in the arms of Jesus.

Dear Paul and Rebecca:

I met Alex many years ago when he was very young, so I really did not know him. However, I know you and your wife and you are the best people that I know and so I know that Alex is too.

It hurt my heart deeply when I heard of his passing...I cannot express my sadness for all of you.

When I was young and a close family member passed away, my Dad told me a saying that was written over the gate to the cemetery in West Palm...."That Which is as Universal as Death Must be a Blessing"....it seemed cold to me at the time, but I understand it now and I hope that you find solace in it sometime.

Truly yours,
Garret

I met Alex through my boyfriend and even though i hadn't known him long, i knew what a wonderful man he was. He always had a smile on his face and never had anything bad to say about anyone. I still remeber when he was feeling down about his love life me and my boyfriend invited him over for tacos. We all had such a good time and even ended up sitting in old mud tires in the yard singing good old country songs. He was agreat friend and was becoming a great mechanic. I will miss him dearly and my prayers go out to his friends and family.
