Fr. Alex was born on the island of Corfu, Greece in 1936, the son of Rev. Demetrios A. and Presbytera Athena Sgouros. He emigrated to the US with his family while still a minor. Fr. Alex graduated from Holy Cross Seminary in Brookline, MA, then followed his father and great-grandfather into the priesthood.
Before his ordination, he married the mother of his children, Miranda, in February 1964. They honeymooned in Florida, where they found beautiful weather and a newly formed parish, St. Stefanos, in search of a priest. Over the next 37 years, Fr. Alex had the honor of serving thousands of diverse parishioners at various communities in Florida; Brooklyn, NY; and Worcester, MA. He fondly remembered the many kind and generous people he met on his journey.
Upon retirement, Fr. Alex moved back to Corfu where he filled in at whichever churches the bishop sent him, including one in Sgourades. During his down time, he enjoyed drinking coffee and talking politics with his many cousins and childhood friends. He returned to the US for visits with his family and to co-officiate at both his daughter’s and son’s weddings.
We already miss his kind encouraging words, beautiful singing and chanting, and how he lit up whenever he saw his son or daughter. We will also remember him for his funny stories (especially from his time at the Seminary), his spot-on impressions, and his love of classical music, opera, daily walks and the beach.
He was predeceased by his parents, his older sister Presbytera Helen (Nitsa) S. Markantonis, BIL Rev. Stanley (Stelios) Markantonis, older brothers Dr. Adam Sgouros (FSU 1980) and Niko Sgouros, who sadly died in childhood. He was also tragically predeceased by his niece, Vicky S. Markantonis, earlier this year.
In addition to the mother of his children, Fr. Alex is survived by his daughter, Stephanie Sgouros (husband Vincent Russo), son Demetri Sgouros (wife CanLi), and grandson Evan Wang, all of Tallahassee; SIL Joanne Sgouros, beloved nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, great-grandniece, and many cousins.
Many thanks to all who assisted Fr. Alex during his illness, including the fine officers of the Tallahassee Police Department (including K-9 Jon Jon), the caring staff at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital and Southern Medical Group, his caregivers and staff at the Villas of Killearn Lakes, special helpers Jeff Henry and Corinna Reeves, the amazing nurses, therapists, social workers, advisors and other staff at Big Bend Hospice and our wonderful support group of friends. You all have a special place in our hearts.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Big Bend Hospice and/or Holy Mother of God Greek Orthodox Church.
