Amelia Alcantara Cardona, fondly known to many as Amy, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on October 7, 2025 in Tallahassee, FL at the age of 84. Amy was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, godmother, "Auntie", and friend.
Amy was born on February 19, 1941, to Lourdes and Arturo Alcantara in Marikina, Rizal, in the Philippines.
Amy possessed a great sense of humor and had a heart of gold. She definitely lived life to the fullest. She was known for her passion and love for her family, entertaining, cooking, traveling the world, dancing, shopping, gardening and mahjong. You name it, she was willing to participate.
Amy’s home in Tallahassee, where she and her husband, Alejandro (Alex), have lived since 1977, was always a hub of social activity – especially during the holidays – filled with laughter, joy, and her delicious Filipino cuisine, including her staples of pancit, chicken adobo, lechon, vegetable egg rolls (lumpia), meat egg rolls and her teriyaki wings.
More than anything, Amy cherished spending time with her family. Shortly before her passing, on July 13th, Amy and Alex celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary. Amy is survived by her devoted husband, Alex; her daughter, Stephanie (Jason); her two sons, Ross and Tony; granddaughter, Michelle (Drew); and four great-grandchildren, Caiden (14), Makayla (13), Isabella (6) and Noah (4); all whom hold her dear to their hearts.
Amy attended and graduated with her premedical studies degree from The University of the East in the Philippines and obtained her Doctor of Medicine from The University of the East Ramon Magsaysay Memorial College in Quezon City, Philippines (UERM) in 1965. Amy was a dedicated physician who touched the lives of thousands in the healthcare field, whether it was in her private practices or her affiliations with the many medical departments of The State of Florida.
After graduating from medical school in 1965, Amy moved to the United States, which was a dream of hers. She completed a pediatric residency at Bronx-Lebanon Hospital in New York City. She then completed a second residency in psychiatry at Norwich State Hospital in Norwich, Connecticut. Amy moved to Florida in 1971 to start her medical career with Dr. Watson in Milton, then later moved to Chattahoochee where she was a staff psychiatrist with the Florida State Hospital. From there, Amy went into pediatric private practice for four years with Dr. Pat Woodward where she was fondly known by her patients and their parents as “The Baby Doctor” and then served in several positions with the State of Florida. After 24 years of dutiful service with the state, Amy officially retired in 2001.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, October 18, 2025, from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm at Culley's MeadowWood Funeral Home, located at 700 Timberlane Road, Tallahassee, Florida, 32312. The funeral service will follow at the same location, beginning at 2:00 pm.
