C. Burton Craig Jr., began his career as a Fire Fighter with the City of South Miami Fire Department on March 14, 1960, and was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant October 01, 1964. He retained his rank when South Miami Fire Department merged with the Dade County Fire Department in the mid 1960's. He remained at Station #14, but later transferred to the Fire Prevention Bureau when requested to do so by Chief Bullock.
In the 1970's, Lieutenant Craig was one of the pioneers asked to begin the Fire-Rescue program that we know today. He was on Engine #15, at the original beach front location, while attending medical classes and working in the local hospitals assisting the emergency room doctors.
When the new Station #15 opened, he was a Lieutenant for new Rescue #15. From there, he went to Engine #4 in Perrine, then to the new Station #4 as the Lieutenant for "A" shift Rescue #4, until the beginning of 1980.
In the early 1980's, he was at Station #34 for a short time, then decided to return to an engine at Station #5, where he was the "A" Shift Lieutenant . In the early 1990's, he served as the Air Support Lieutenant, then to Support Division. He retired as the #1 Lieutenant in Seniority of the Miami Dade Fire-Rescue Department on October 30, 1995, finishing his long career as the "A" shift Support Lieutenant.
Last night, January 09, 2014, my father, retired Fire Lieutenant C. Burton Craig Jr., died unexpectedly at peace in the arms of his wife, Linda. He was in his cabin on his 20 acres of forest, where he really enjoyed living.
