
Don was born on May 6th, 1940 in Dickinson, North Dakota and with a passion to be a pilot joined the United States Navy where he traveled the world as a naval aviator.
He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from the University of West Florida while assigned as a flight instructor at NAS Whiting Field.
His post-Naval career included military defense contract services and working as a Commodities Broker with Merrill Lynch in Washington DC. Don was also an instructor at Northern Virginia Community College for automotive mechanics and spent his later years as an active member in both the Tallahassee MG and Mustang clubs where he always shared his knowledge and talents with classic car restoration.
Don is survived by his wife of 60 years, Kathleen Martin Schmidt; his daughter, Adrianne; two grandchildren, Lawson and Lauren; along with his brother, Jim Schmidt; his sisters; and his youngest brother.
Don had many hobbies and talents from restoring classic cars, garden landscaping, remodeling homes, travel, reading and being a good friend to many.
He was known for his humor and quick wit along with his giving nature and kindness. He always helped out friends and family in need.
Above all he was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.
Military burial service will be held at Tallahassee National Cemetery on Monday, March 2nd at 1pm and is open to all. In keeping with his wishes no funeral service will be held.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his memory to The First Commerce Center for Compassionate Care (FCCCC) of Big Bend Hospice at TMH either online or by mail.
