

Born in Jacksonville, Florida, July 13, 1920, he graduated from the Coast Guard Academy in 1943 and fought in World War II in the Mediterranean. Following the war he became an aviator. During a distinguished 30-year career he participated in numerous search and rescue missions. His final assignments were as Commanding Officer ofthe Coast Guard air base in Opa-Locka, Florida (1966-69) and Deputy Chief of Staff at Coast Guard headquarters in Washington, D.C. (1969-1973). After living in many locations around the United States, Capt. Reed and his wife chose to retire in Tallahassee in 1973.
He is survived by his wife Betty and daughters Robin Gault (Christopher) of Tallahassee, Donna Rasmussen (Harry) of Milton, Florida, and Melanie Hawkins (Ken) of Portland, Oregon, and grandsons Will and Ben Hawkins.
A private family memorial service will be planned at a later date. Donations in Capt. Reed's memory may be made to Big Bend Hospice, 1723 Mahan Center Boulevard, Tallahassee, FL 32308-5428.
