

She was a graduate of Auburn University with a Bachelor of Arts in interior design. After graduating Auburn University she worked as a draftsman for several years. In 1971 she received a Master of Science in Art Education from Florida State University. She was born in San Antonio, TX, June 10, 1923, to Tillman Smith and Julia Byrd Smith, growing up in Montgomery, AL. In 1945, she married Thomas Duncan Head upon his return from the Navy after World War Two. She accompanied him to Auburn while he completed his education to become a physician and then on to Bethesda, MD for his residency and then to Key West. Upon resigning from the Navy, they moved to Crawfordville in 1954, where he was the county doctor. She assisted him in his medical practice, managed her home and was active in community service until Dr. Head died in 1964. She was then employed by the Girl Scout Council of the Apalachee Bend as field advisor. She went back to college, receiving her teaching credentials, joining the Wakulla County School system to teach art at Wakulla County High School.
During a long career with Wakulla County Schools, she was involved as secretary with the Florida Art Supervisors’ Organization; co-chairman and chairperson with FAEA Professional Materials Committee; recorder with the State of Florida Art Education Instructional Materials Council; and was on the State Committee for Revision of Secondary Art Guide. She was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society, Alpha Lambda Chapter. She was active with the Crawfordville First Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school and was a volunteer with various activities with the school system and county until her retirement.
Survivors include a son, Thomas Michael Head and his wife Kathy, and three grandchildren; Mary Kathryn Head, Sarah Ardanuy Johnson and husband Tony, David Ardanuy and fiancée Rachel Zeitz , as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews in Texas, New York, South Carolina and Alabama.
Her mother, Julia Braswell, her father, Tillman Smith, her husband and an infant son preceded her in death.
Visitation will be Friday evening from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Culley's Meadowood Funeral Home 1737 Riggins Road. Funeral Services will be held at Crawfordville First Baptist Church Saturday at 2:00 pm. Where they will conclude. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Big Bend Hospice of Tallahassee, 1723 Mahan Center Blvd., Tallahassee, 32308.
