George H. Gill, Jr., 94 years old, passed away peacefully on October 8th of this year while residing at the Clare Bridge Assisted Living Facility in Tallahassee, FL.
In the summer of 1943, while serving in the U.S. Army Air Corp, young George was presented with silver wings that designated him as a military pilot. On October 8, 2012, some 69 years later, George has been presented with golden wings, designating him as one of Heaven’s newest angels. George was many things during his time on this earth. He was a pilot. He served throughout World War II as a fighter pilot, flying the single engine P-40 and later becoming a multi-engine long range bomber pilot, flying both B-17s and B-29s. After the war, George continued his career in aviation as an airport owner and a civilian flight instructor for both the Army and the Air Force. During his flying career, he accumulated over 20,000 flying hours as Pilot in Command, including time in open cockpit biplanes, Air Force jets and Army helicopters. Yes, he was a pilot. But he was so much more than just a pilot. Most of all… and above all else, he was a loving Husband, Father and Grandfather. As a husband, his life and love revolved around Eleanor, his beloved wife of almost 50 years. He never fully recovered from her death in 1993. As a Father and Grandfather, his love was unconditional for his three children, his three grandchildren, his daughter-in-law and his son-in-law.
George was preceded in death by both of his parents and his loving wife Eleanor.
He is survived by his three children, (George H. Gill, III of Havana, FL; Debra Lynn Teague of Midway, GA; and Toni Ann Muir of Tallahassee, FL), his daughter-in-law (Shirley Gill of Havana, FL), his son-in-law (Billy Teague of Midway, GA) and three grandchildren (Shane Gill of Clearwater, FL, and Tammy and Heather Teague of Midway, GA).
George’s family would like to express their deep appreciation to the administrators and direct care staff of Clare Bridge ALF, the Covenant Hospice nursing staff, and friends and neighbors in Tallahassee, FL, for their personal and professional commitment to the love, care and concern that they continuously demonstrated on a daily basis.
George lived his life by a simple and basic creed – “Always work hard, have lots of fun when you can, never hurt anyone and never back down from a fight when you know that you have goodness on your side”. In life, much like flying, when you feel that you’re surrounded by darkness, black clouds, angry headwinds, turbulence and stormy weather above… stay your course, keep climbing through it and all of a sudden there will be blue skies and smooth flying, for you see, it’s always blue on top. We love you, Dad.
Arrangements are under the direction of Culley's MeadowWood Funeral Home in Tallahassee, Florida.
