Hutson was born on April 5, 1939 to Beulah and James Messer Sr. in Tallahassee, Florida. Hutson grew up in Tallahassee at the Messer House located at the now historically designated landmark of Mission San Luis. After graduating from Leon High School in 1956, he went on to attend Washington and Lee University where he earned a BS degree in 1960.
Being drawn to medicine, Hutson chose to enroll at the University of Florida where he earned a medical doctorate in 1965.
After graduation, he pursued his medical residency in Charleston, SC where the foundation for his love of sailing and the sea was firmly entrenched in his soul. Upon completion of his residency, Dr. Messer returned to Tallahassee to enter private practice as an OBGYN. He continued his medical practice from 1970 until 2018. After a 49 year career as a medical doctor in Tallahassee, Dr. Messer retired from private practice. Throughout his life, he was an avid hunter, sailor and fisherman, devoted husband and father.
Hutson was predeceased by James Messer Sr. and Beulah Hutson Trapnell. He is survived by his loving wife, Margaret Messer; his sons, Graham Messer (Rosie), Robert Stewart (Tracey), Bill Stewart (Mireille) and Matt Stewart (Linnea); his daughters, Moret Prokopcuks (Alex) and Mindy Rubin; his cherished grandchildren who affectionately called him “Papa Gator”, Alaina, Alek, Ryan, Landon, Liam, Ashton, Emma, Mattias, Sebastian, Christian and Aubrey.
He loved his Lord and savior Jesus Christ.
"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life". - John 3:16.
