Deepest condolences to his family. I had Iraj as a professor at La Verne. He cared about his students and their education, many times more than the actual students did. I will always fondly remember Iraj.

My sincere condolences to Shahin, Patty, Payam and the extended family.  I count his many students among the extended family for as a dedicated educator his students became his intellectual progeny.  They held him in high regard and with profound respect.  In the summer of 1987, I interviewed Iraj for the ULV organic chemistry position from Plano Texas, where I was consulting at the time.  If I remember correctly, he was still at UT-Austin.  His passion for the sciences was very clear in that interview and we shared interest in a number of areas.  Through the years we collaborated on several projects, prime among them the MeOH reforming – hydrogen fuel cell system.  Work with Melvin Miles, on “benchtop (cold) fusion” also comes to mind.  In conjunction with these projects, we visited various institutions in search of collaboration.  Probably the most interesting was the China Lake Naval Weapons Laboratory.  We regularly attended focused meetings on NMR, the ACS section meetings, and occasionally national meetings.  We ventured into a consulting corporation with John Johannas, Solencon, although the pace of change and the workload at ULV did not allow it to bear fruit.  We collaborated on grant proposals and shared the misery of trying to keep our instrumentation and facilities in working order.  In short, I gained so much from this knowledgeable and unique man who gave so much to his students and others as well.  Beyond the scope of science Iraj shared perspectives on life in France and Iran, including politics, religion, insights about humanity, his high regard of the poetry of Rumi and so much more.  Although I have received countless gifts of knowledge, perspective and friendship from many colleagues, I fully acknowledge that Iraj was one of, if not the most effective in terms of expanding my awareness and knowledge.  Like all of us, he was not without quirks.  But those only confirmed his humanity.  I miss him dearly.

When I first joined the Mathematics Department at the University of La Verne, I was a young professor trying to find my way. Iraj was instrumental in guiding me during that time. He offered wisdom, encouragement, and a quiet confidence that helped me feel at home.

Iraj and his wife, Shahin, were both incredibly kind and gracious. Together, they created a sense of warmth and community that extended beyond the University. Their generosity, hospitality, and care for others left a lasting impression on me.

Iraj was not only a brilliant and dedicated educator  he was a good man, and a steady presence in our lives. We will always remember him with respect, gratitude, and deep affection.

Dear Shahin, Patty, and Payam,
Having just seen the news today, my heart goes out to all of you, and I wish I could give you all a big hug.  I did not know what Iraj was fighting in his later years, and now dealing myself with Suzanne's rapidly worsening Parkinson's after 18 years of it, I feel I have some idea of what you all (and Iraj, of course) have suffered through, although not having the considerable added burden of dementia. I have many fond memories of working with Iraj on his hydrogen reforming project, as well as playing volleyball with him in the gym at lunchtime. I can just hear him say, "How is possible?" He was a good man, kind and warm and very intelligent, and will be sorely missed by a multitude of students, colleagues, and friends. As difficult as it is to comprehend initially, know that he is at last resting in peace without having to battle illness.

We came to know Iraj through the friendship our son Kenny formed with his son, Payam, during their ULV University years. Through the many ULV get-togethers, we had the pleasure of spending time with Iraj and Shahin. Those moments-filled with laughter, conversation, and shared stories-quickly made us feel as though we had known them much longer, Iraj had warmth and thoughtful presence that made every time together special. We are grateful for our sons’ friendship. Knowing Iraj, even for a chapter of our lives has left a lasting impression on our hearts. ❤️Rich & Diane George
