

Mary Jane “Non” Carey Hough, age 93, of Tallahassee, Florida, formerly of Berlin, WI, passed away on Tuesday, January 2nd, 2018 in Florida following a short illness. She was surrounded by her daughters, grandchildren, and one of her brothers. Non was born April 10, 1924 at her Grandparents’ Farm in Poy Sippi, WI and spent her youth on the Carey Family Farm along the Fox River on Waushara Street, 1 ½ miles East Northeast of Berlin, WI. She attended Berlin Area Schools and Berlin High School, graduating as a member of the Class of 1941. Following High School, she worked in the Berlin, WI offices of Drs. Mildred and Grant Stone and later attended Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Oshkosh, WI where she graduated as a Registered Nurse in 1958.
Upon graduation, she and her family moved to Coconut Grove, FL where she served as a Registered Nurse at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Coral Gables, FL for 12 years. She later worked at the Miami Heart Institute as the Hospital Supervisor for six years. While working, she prudently invested in income real estate in Florida making it possible for her to take an early retirement in 1977 to manage those properties, travel throughout the USA with her husband, and spend time with her family. Non was a lifelong advocate of Berlin High School, having greatly enjoyed her education years there and she became a significant donor to the Berlin High School Alumni Association Scholarship Program.
Mary Jane was preceded in death by her parents, Robert Emmet Carey and Ruth Margaret Harrison Carey, both of Berlin, WI, her husband James F. “Charlie” Hough of Miami, FL, and her Brother Robert Harrison Carey of Naperville, IL. She is survived by her daughers, Susan Mary Steverson of Tallahassee, FL, and Nancy [Howard] Louise Gray of San Diego, CA, her brothers Rear Admiral [Ret.] James J. [Arlene] Carey of Alexandria, VA and Dennis J. Carey of St. Petersburg, FL; her Stepchildren Mary [Allan] Fisher of Earlysville, VA, Captain [Ret.] James [Markey] Hough of Lake Oswego, OR, Thomas [Blakeney] Hough of Fairlee, VT, and John Hough of Germantown, MD; also Grandchildren Jennifer [Adam] Aldridge of Milton, FL, Mary [Chip] Heimbach of Tallahassee, FL, and Tom [Tomme] Hough of Eagle River, AK, and Great Grandchildren Cara and Joseph Aldridge, Jenny, George, and Jordan Heimbach, and Zoey and Rowan Hough.
A Memorial Mass will be held at the Co-Cathedral of St. Thomas More in Tallahassee, FL on January 20, 2018.
