

Jane Yancey Sutton of Tallahassee, Florida passed away peacefully last Saturday, February 24th, at the home of her daughter, Lulu Hosford.
Jane was the loving daughter of Mr. Malcolm Nicholas Yancey and his wife, Mrs. Annie Mae Yancey. Jane was one of 10 siblings, they raised together in their family home on North Calhoun Street, in old downtown Tallahassee, during the 30s, 40s & 50s.
Jane was a graduate of Leon High School where she was a popular student. She participated as a varsity cheerleader and school calendar girl. She was also a member of the Tallahassee May Queen Court in 1951.
Jane held special teaching certificates for the teaching of young children and children with learning disabilities.
Jane had a very special God-given gift for teaching children, not only in academic fundamentals, but inspiring them in the best good character attributes as well. For more than four decades, Jane owned and operated Sutton’s Educational Day Care where she was renowned and greatly respected for her huge talents with helping the children of Tallahassee for many many years with Kindergarten skills, first grade preparation, arts & crafts, gardening, story telling, specialized academic tutoring, etc.
Jane had larger than life charisma about her and a huge giving and loving spirit with a big voice to match. Folks were naturally drawn to her commanding, boisterous, warm and friendly nature, especially children.
Jane knew most of Tallahassee’s residents throughout the years. She had several lifelong friendships. Her first born daughter, Patricia Ann is named for two of her dearest friends.
Jane enjoyed several hobbies which she did very well. They included ceramics and porcelain works, needle works of crocheting, cross stitch and quilt making.
Jane also was a nature lover. She loved the outdoors, the song birds, animals and flowers, especially daisies. Among her favorite places were the Wakulla River and The Mountains. She had homes at both locations and enjoyed spending time at each. She especially enjoyed when her family and friends would come to visit her. Jane’s main homestead for many happy years was on the Wakulla River.
It is well-known that Jane’s biggest joy and most-prized possessions were hers and her husband of many years, Louis Andrew Sutton’s five children, eleven grandchildren and twenty two great grandchildren. She loved each of them dearly and each one had their own special spot in her heart. She enjoyed every minute she could spend with them all.
Jane joined in heaven, her parents, some of her siblings and other very dear, special loved ones including her oldest son, John Louis Sutton and the love of her life, Louis Andrew Sutton.
Jane is survived by her immediate family of her four remaining children, daughter, Patricia Ann Sutton Robb (Merle Robb), daughter, Frances Louise “Lulu” Sutton Hosford, son, Yancey Marion Sutton (Caroline Sutton) and son, Louis Andrew Sutton Jr. (Mina Sutton); her eleven grandchildren, Kerri Miranda Johnson, Mitchell Gerard Robb, Colson Yancey Hosford, Joseph Malcolm Hosford, Layton DeCarr Hosford, Randall Louis Sutton, Nicholas Stephens Sutton, Matthew Yancey Sutton, Amy Love Sutton, Amanda Louise Sutton and Elizabeth Jane Sutton and their respective spouses; her twenty-two great grandchildren and other beloved extended family members.
Jane’s Memorial Service will be held at Culley’s Funeral Home 1737 Riggins Road, Tallahassee Florida 32308 on, Saturday March 9, 2024 at 11 AM.
