Joseph M. Barranco, Jr., loving husband and father, age 77, passed away on Tuesday, August 13, 2024, at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital. He was born in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida on September 14, 1946. Joe was a graduate of Florida State University and long-time resident of Tallahassee. He worked as an elementary physical education teacher for thirty-one years, serving at Bond Elementary, Sealey Elementary, and Springwood Elementary schools.
Joe was active with the Knights of Columbus at St. Louis Catholic Church. He helped with the Lenten Fish Fry dinners, Boston Butt BBQ sales, started an aluminum can crushing program, and had a leading role in designing the kitchen layout for the meeting hall.
He enjoyed helping the Boy Scouts in Troop 44 and often assisted with their campouts and trips. He was especially proud of his son Jeff when he earned his Eagle Scout Badge while in Troop 44. Joe also enjoyed travelling to various games and tournaments with his son’s baseball teams.
Several times a year Joe would join “the guys” on weekend golf outings. His most recent interests have been gardening and music. He and his wife designed trails around their back yard which include over 100 plants. It gave him great pleasure to “play” in his back yard (when he wasn’t watching FSU football). His latest pleasure was to make people laugh with his stories. He would ask them for a subject, and he would tell them a story based on that topic. Nine times out of ten, the story would be true!
Joe was preceded in death by his father, Joe Barranco Sr., his mother Virginia and his sister Mary.
Joe is survived by his wife Michele, son Jeffrey and two granddaughters Harper and Riley, his brother Ben and sister Beverly.
A private graveside service will be held at Culley’s MeadowWood Memorial Park on Sunday at 2:00 P.M.
