I truly do not even know where to start. Attempting to put what you mean to me and the things you taught me into words almost seems impossible. Tenacity, hard work, honesty, the black and white of right and wrong, all of these were ways to live by for you. However, one lesson will always jump out in front of the others and it was something that was just innate within you. That lesson is putting others before myself. As you so eloquently demonstrated this trait throughout your life, both professionally and personally, one day will always stand out for me. The doctor had just left the hospital room after revealing what we had all feared. Grandma and I sat with you for a while in silence, for there were truly no words to be spoken. You were the first to speak, telling grandma, "Call the kids." As she got up to do so and to go take care of some other necessary things back at the house, you instructed me to go with her. After the news we had gotten leaving your side was the last thing either of us wanted to do and I definitely was not going to leave you alone. Even after Grandmas insistence that she would be okay alone, you pulled me over and said "Boy, I want you to drive grandma back home and make sure shes okay." The lump in my throat must have been the size of a baseball. It takes a truly special man to get that kind of information, have your emotions and thoughts pulling you in a million directions and your first thought be, "I need to protect my wife" for she even in that moment, was still your number one priority. If ever someone was allowed to have a selfish moment, that would've been it. But you were never an ordinary man and you didn't let your life be defined by ordinary moments. These kinds of actions and the countless others will forever always be your legacy for me. I will miss your smile, your spaghetti and Ceviche, which both had onions but I loved anyway, our sports talks (which often became lessons), you passing out gifts on Christmas, your food and coffee always being cold, and those classic unprovoked attacks that anyone who has been on the receiving end of knows exactly what I'm talking about. Watching the Superbowl, The Masters, and The Players will never be the same. Jimbo Fisher can win 10 national championships, hes not Bobby Bowden and never will be. I cant imagine how a day will go by that I wont think of you and I know you will always be looking out for all of us, because thats what you have always done. My last name may not be Spradlin, but my middle name will always be Lloyd and that is something I will cherish and try my best to honor day in and day out for as long as God gives me on this Earth. I love and miss you Grandpa.

Ray and I are honored to be considered among the friends of Lloyd Spradlin.  We are privileged to have known him for many years and, for a short time, to have been his down-the-street neightbors in Tallahassee.  Ray still talks about the afternoons out with the guys playing some funky shuffleboard-like game, the name of which, he can't remember.  As a newcomer to the group and the game, Lloyd took Ray under his wing and taught him how to play, but he always had a few choice words for Ray when he let the team down with a less than perfect shot!

I will remember when Lloyd showed us his "softer side" the day that we were loading a moving van with our belongings as we traveled back to California from Tallahassee.  The new owners of our home were already inside ripping up carpet and wallpaper as I stood alone in our front yard, crying.  Lloyd put his arm around my shoulders, picked up his cell phone and called Margaret to tell her "you'd better get down here, we've got a meltdown!"  

The Garza family remembers many Sunday afternoons at the Spradlin home in San Diego when we got together to cheer our favorite team, the Chargers.  There was always Lloyd's scumptious barbequed ribs, lots of laughter and fun.  

"In time, the heart heals, leaving us with memories-not of sorrow and pain, but of the love we have known."  Go with God, Lloyd, your pain is over.

My best memory of my Uncle Lloyd was ironically after my grandma Louise passed away. Being a lot younger than the rest of the family and also separated by miles away from each other, I never felt especially close to my uncle. I always knew I loved him and that he loved me, but it felt like a distant connection. I had always thought he was just a quiet man and that he was like my papa Woody in that way. After my Grandma passed away, my mother, my auntie Tannis, and my Uncle Lloyd cleared out the house and got it ready to be sold. I walked in one night to find nothing but a small pop up table placed in the living room with my Uncle Lloyd sitting there. I was very worried for him because I knew how much he missed and loved his mother. I contemplated about him being such a quiet man before and worried what he would become after her passing. I thought for sure I would never hear him speak a word again. To my surprise he looked up at me and tapped his hand on the chair next to him signaling me to take a seat next to him. I hesitated for a second not sure if his gesture was for me and when I realized it was I couldn't get myself in that chair fast enough. I sat down a little nervous because I had never found myself in this position sitting alone at a table with my Uncle. I sighed with relief when he was the first to say something. What he said I'll remember for the rest of my life. He started out by saying how proud he was of me for sticking with soccer growing up and how proud he was of his niece for receiving a soccer scholarship to a university. I can't express enough how great that felt. I never thought I needed the approval of my Uncle Lloyd before, but being a girl, I took that chance to have another father figure approval if you will. He knew I had been struggling a bit playing college ball and he continued to praise me for not giving up to live my dream. It was so good to hear from him and I could literally feel the love in my heart grow for him. I thought he would end it at that but we ended up talking sports and school for the rest of the night until we exhausted each other. It was truly a life changing experience and every meeting with my Uncle Lloyd after that night followed much like that one. He was not a quiet man to me anymore. He was a caring and loving man to me and I respected him and looked up to him more than he probably knew. 

To my Uncle Lloyd: Thank you for the gift you gave me. I will miss you forever and my only regret is that you never got to see me play. Well now I know every time I step on the field you will be there to watch over me. I'm so glad I got to see you at my sister's wedding. I was so proud that my Auntie Margaret and Uncle Lloyd won the competition dance of who had been married the longest. I remember watching you two dance and feeling so envious of your love. The love between you two emanated out over the whole crowd and I'm so happy I got to be a part of that. I'm glad I entertained you that night with my dancing. I never thought I would have someone tell me they had a great time watching me get drunk off my keester! :) Thank you for that! I love you so much! RIP

The service was beautiful today and very touching. Thank you for inviting the ones who lovingly took care of your husband and father.

We were so saddened at the news of Lloyds passing. He was a good man and a friend.  We remember his devilish grin that always reminded us of someone having been caught with his hand in the cookie jar but still dared you to prove it.  His manner sometimes seemed harsh but his heart was made of gold - unless you were a "bad-guy".  His loyalty to family and country was beyond compare.  He will always be remembered by those who had the privilege of knowing him.  
One thing Lloyd, and Margaret, gave to us that we will forever be grateful, our beloved Daughter-in-Law Tracy.

Uncle Lloyd was our family patriarch and there is a big hole left in his absence. What a wonderful tribute to a great man and a BIG LIFE well-lived to know so many people loved and respected him. Margaret, Ryan, John, Tracy and Brett,

I was deeply saddened when Ryan told me of Lloyd's passing last week but was thankful that he was no longer in pain.  I was also grateful I could get down to see him in Tallahassee in April and hear how proud he was of his weight (176 pounds!), his yard and pergola, his Ridgeline and of course his family.

Of the many things I'll remember about Lloyd, from playing softball at the JCC in San Diego to teeing it up for what was sure to be a fun round, I'll appreciate most the fact that he took the time to work with and teach younger agents, and he was always there with a smart or funny comment.  Even though we hadn't seen each other from when we left San Diego until we played golf again at the Wilhelm Tournament, we picked up where we left off, trash talking on the tee box and of course, me beating him again!

I apologize that I can't be at the funeral this week but all of you will be in my thoughts and you continue to be in my prayers.  I will miss Lloyd and his gruff exterior, not to be confused with the very sincere and caring man that he really was, though he didn't really want you to know it.  As Ryan and I have discussed many times, Lloyd and many of our fathers were from a different era, but they deeply cared about their families, their friends and their country, though they didn't always let you know.

May God keep watch over all of you and give you peace this week.  If I can help in any way, please know I am only a phone call away.

Where do I start, it is with an empty and heavy heart that I find myself writing you this message.  One that is most regretful, in part because I hoped and prayed this dark day would never arrive. Comparible to a horrid dream that you are unable to wake up from, it is with deep sorrow and sadness that reality has reared its ugly head.  You have been with me from the first day I opened my squinty eyes to lifes bright lights, until the last courageous and hard fought days of your own.  I can't thank you enough for the man you were, the lessons you instilled in me, and the person you helped me evolve into.  My life has been an up and down ride and without the (tough) love and support from you and (G-ma), I'm sure  I wouldn't be on the narrow path I am today.  I owe a great part of that to you and hope you are looking down from heaven smiling and proud.  You had the spunkiest of attitudes one in which the world has yet to re-create, the heart that would do for anyone, and a smile that could light up times square. You were the rock and foundation of our family that kept us cohesive, and the one to clean up everyone's mess and mistakes.  On behalf of everyone I want to thank you for that.  Whether talking about life or hearing your world famous (Lloydisms) there was never a dull moment.  You were always the life of the party, a significant presence that will be dearly missed.  You are truly one of a kind and what a tremendous honor it has BEEN and IS to call you MY G-pa.  I promise to carry your legacy on forever (like I did your golf clubs through the Panama Canal Reunion) and will always keep you in my heart for the rest of my days.  Our relationship and the bond we shared is one I will treasure forever and is something I am most proud of.  I love you forever G-pa and if you would, help my golf game out it is really struggling (I know its always gonna struggle because you suck boy) I'll miss your roasts and unprovoked attacks on me as well. You are the greatest man this earth has ever known, and no words or tears can ever express how much I miss you.  Until that glorious day we meet again Goodbye Grandpa.

To MY Lil A:  I loved you from the first day I met you and felt a special bond with you from the very beginning!  I will miss the smile, our funny nickname, showing me how to swing "your" clubs, your visits to Atlanta to do what you loved the most - GOLF, our long talks about life, and just being YOU. Otto and Cali will miss being spoiled rotten by Grandpa feeding them donuts and letting them jump on the furniture.   I could write a book about the things I loved about you but it would take up the page.  To end, I am proud to be your daughter in law and you will always hold a special place in my heart.
