Martin Joseph Chick, Jr., Joe, of Tallahassee, Florida, 69, passed away peacefully on December 3, 2023 surrounded by his loving family following a brief illness complicated by Parkinsonism. He was preceded in death by his parents Martin Joseph Chick Sr. and Bobbie Lou Chick.
Joe was born in Augusta Georgia on June 8 1954 and raised in neighboring Aiken South Carolina where he attended St. Angela’s Academy. He became a proud Carolina Gamecock graduating from the University of South Carolina with a Bachelor’s Degree from the School of Engineering in 1976. Upon graduation, Joe began his career in central Georgia as a construction manager and civil engineer for large road building companies before settling down in Tallahassee Florida. It wasn’t until then that he met his wife, Stacy Lane Chick. He was married to Stacy on May 21, 1983, and enjoyed over 40 years of marriage.
Joe began his career in Tallahassee working with Ajax Construction, a well respected family commercial construction firm. Following encouragement from company founder and mentor Block Smith, Joe launched his own general contracting firm in 1983. He founded A&J Construction Management, taking special consideration to select a corporate name that would land him a top spot in the telephone directory. Joe experienced a remarkable career in commercial construction and real estate development as Tallahassee’s medical community and student rental market grew. Later in his career Joe focused exclusively on the continued construction and management of student housing surrounding Florida State University. During this time “Mr. Joe” was indirectly responsible for the future marriages of several of his tenants and is fondly remembered by the Honeysuckle Honeys and many others as the best student housing owner landlord in Tallahassee.
Joe was an active member of Blessed Sacrament Church and very devoted to Trinity Catholic School during his children’s time there which spanned over twenty years. His passion was his church and his children evidenced by his commitment to both school and church initiatives. During his most important role as a father he was a frequent party host, dance partner, gate keeper, parking attendant, chauffer and chaperone for his children and their large friend group. His children have fond memories being dropped off at school in all variety of construction vehicles including the dump truck on occasion.
He is survived by his wife Stacy and their four children, Joseph Chick III (fiancé Jaclyn), Catherine Chick (fiancé Andrew), Sydney Chick, James Chick; beloved granddaughter Olivia Chick, cherished sister Cathy Turner (Stan) and favorite Aunt Betty Nicholson; as well as numerous other family and friends.
The family will host a celebration of life in the spring of 2024. Joe will always be remembered for his faith, dedication to family, love of Chick-fil-A and desire to dance with family and friends. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to Big Bend Hospice or the Alzheimer’s Project. These organizations were of tremendous support to Joe and family during his illness.
