

He was born at home in Indianapolis, Indiana to Helen M. Fox Mendenhall and Joseph H. Mendenhall, Sr. Phillip and his brother, Joe, were raised by their mother and grandmother.
He enlisted in the US Navy Reserves and Army after high school then returned to Indianapolis and worked at RCA. He married Patricia Ann Durbin on July 19, 1957 and they had a daughter, Cheryl, born the following June.
Phillip enlisted into the Air Force when their daughter was six which lead to a 29 year career where he received a Bronze Star medal for meritorious service. He and his family enjoyed their time spent with the Air Force and loved the many bases he was stationed at and the wonderful places they were able to see and travel to.
After retiring from the service, Phillip and Patricia moved to Tallahassee, Fl. to be near their daughter and her family. Phillip worked for the U.S. Postal Service for many years as a city route mail carrier.
After Patricia’s passing in 2014 he decided to move into the Armed Forces Retirement Home. First in Washington, DC then to Gulfport, Ms.
Phillip is survived by his daughter, Cheryl Thompson; grandson, Justin Thompson; nieces and nephews, Terri Such of Brownsburg, In., Garry Mendenhall of Indianapolis, In., Steve Lucas, Gay Ann LaGrange, and Scott Lucas of Franklin, In.
He is preceded by his mother; stepfather, Frank Miller; brothers, Joseph Mendenhall and John Miller; and son-in-law, Gerald W. Thompson.
A visitation will be held at Culley's MeadowWood Funeral Home, located at 700 Timberlane Road, Tallahassee, FL, 32312, on September 30, 2025, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm.
A graveside service with military honors will take place at MeadowWood Memorial Park, 700 Timberlane Road, Tallahassee, FL, 32312, on October 1, 2025, starting at 10:30 am.
