

Roger Joseph Doherty, Jr., 69, passed away Monday, July 19, 2021. A native of Pittsburgh, PA he made Tallahassee his home in 1982. He retired from the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity (DEO), where he worked as a grant planning manager. He recently returned to work managing grants for the Florida DEO Disaster Recovery Division.
Roger was a member of the Lafayette Presbyterian Church and a volunteer and trail leader for the Apalachee Chapter of the Florida Trails Association. He was passionate about nature and the outdoors and enjoyed photography, camping, hiking, golfing, traveling, trains and model railroads.
Roger received a Masters of Arts degree in Communications from Michigan State University in 1978. His early careers included working as a 4-H media coordinator and editor in Raleigh, NC; Leon County 4-H extension agent, newspaper reporter for the Carrabelle and Appalachicola Times, and a Highway Safety Planner and DUI Program Coordinator for the Florida Department of Transportation.
Roger was a generous, kind, and caring person who knew no strangers. He left a lasting impression wherever he went and will be missed by his family and friends. He was also a fan of the character Tigger from Winnie the Pooh. As Tigger would say, “He put a bounce in your smile. TTFN! - Ta-ta for now! Until we meet again.”
Roger is preceded in death by his parents, Roger Joseph Doherty and Frances Callahan Doherty; two sisters, Betty Doherty and Fran Buck; and wife, Lora.
Roger is survived by a stepson, Paul Valdez Jr. (and wife Stephanie) of San Diego, CA; three stepdaughters, Tonia M. Daniels (and husband Eddie), Janice L. Blackwood both of Wakulla County, and Jennifer L. Burns (and her husband Cary) of St. Petersburg, FL; and five step grandchildren, Courtney (and son Liam), Kyle (and wife Rachael), Colton, Logan, and Gabby and several nieces and nephews.
A viewing will be held at 6 p.m. Saturday, July 31, 2021. Funeral service will be on Sunday, August 1, 2021 at 11 a.m. All services will be in Culley's MeadowWood Riggins Road Chapel (850-877-8191). In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Habitat for Humanity, 322 West Lamar Street, Americus, Georgia 31709 or Apalachee Chapter Florida Trail Association, C/O James C.
