May 18, 1972-July 3, 2022
Susan was born in Birmingham, Alabama, on May 18, 1972. Growing up, she also lived in Oklahoma City, Jacksonville, and Coral Springs. While in Jacksonville, she attended Terry Parker High School. Once her family relocated to South Florida, she attended and graduated from Coral Springs High School, where she participated in Chorus among other activities. Susan attended Samford University in Birmingham, AL, where she was a legacy member of the Zeta Tau Alpha Fraternity. While in college, she attended Hunter Street Baptist Church. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration.
After graduating with her first Samford degree, Susan worked for SouthTrust Bank, where she eventually became a branch manager in their Medical Banking Group. She also transitioned churches, and joined Dawson Memorial Baptist Church. She became involved with the Single Adult Ministry, and joined the Sanctuary Choir and Praise Team. It was along this time that a new employee joined the Dawson Ministerial Staff. He was very thin, had big-rimmed glasses, and was also a single adult. They hit it off, started dating, and got engaged the following year on July 4th. She had met the love of her life, as had he. Susan and Greg were married on June 7, 1997.
The Lord led Susan to further pursue her education and receive another degree from Samford. This time, she completed the Master of Education Degree. She taught preschool for a short time prior to them starting a family.
Once their two daughters came along, Susan focused her energies as a stay at home Mom. While the girls were young, she homeschooled them. Susan and Greg have been so proud of how their daughters have grown in their love for the Lord, their love for music, and their love for family. Susan passionately loved her family, and served them relentlessly. Likewise, Susan had a family that absolutely adored her, from her husband, to her two daughters, to her parents and sister, and on and on…she loved her family, who in turn passionately loved her!
Not only did Susan have a loving family, she had incredible friends. She and Greg have spent the entire time they’ve known each other serving the Lord and His people in the local church. All along the way, there have been so many precious saints who they have been blessed to serve alongside and to call friends. Additionally, for the last nine years, they have served with great joy and fulfillment alongside the Experience Conference team to support and help facilitate this annual gathering for those serving in worship ministry. There are so many more friends, from so many areas of her life. Not only was she blessed with great friends, she was a great friend to many, walking with friends through challenging seasons of life, helping them laugh (she loved to laugh!), and encouraging them in their faith. She lived fulfilled and with great joy, being blessed through all of those relationships.
Her hobbies included traveling (especially Disney), spending time with their two family dogs, and most things chocolate. She loved to bake and cook, and also took great joy hosting folks from church in their home. She had a wonderful gift of hospitality.
In recent years, Susan went back to work, and became a medical transcriptionist for a family friend who is a physician. Additionally, she was an ambassador for Plexus Worldwide. Susan also became a travel planner with Travelmation. She thoroughly enjoyed helping her travel clients reach their dream destinations.
One of the greatest joys of Susan’s life was her involvement in music and worship ministry. She enjoyed using her musical gifts to lead God’s people in worship. On occasion, she sang with Greg in the Georgia Baptist Jubal Chorus. She was always a partner in ministry with Greg, wherever the Lord took them over the years, having served churches together in Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, and Florida (and certainly being a part of music ministries in additional churches dating back to her early childhood). Susan loved to sing, and sang most of her life. She especially loved singing the praises of God, singing about His goodness and grace, as well as leading alongside Greg to help God’s people lift their worship to the Lord. She was deeply rooted in and intimately involved with Greg’s ministry, serving with him faithfully and completely in each church where the Lord called them. She was a picture of grace, and there was nothing she was unwilling to do in support of her husband and God’s Church. She was God’s choice servant, and one with whom He certainly is well pleased.
While music was a significant joy in Susan’s life, her greatest joy was the saving knowledge of faith as a Christ follower and kingdom ambassador. She accepted Christ’s gift of salvation at an early age, and lived her life surrendered to the Lord and His Word. Everywhere she went, she pointed people to Jesus, and was able to share her faith on many occasions, especially over the last few years.
Susan began a journey of breast cancer in the late fall of 2019. Through an effective and aggressive treatment regimen, she was able to step into remission in 2020. That malignancy came roaring back with a confirmed diagnosis in early June of this year. While this brought answers to some health struggles she had been experiencing in recent months, it also brought an intense (but thankfully brief) struggle with the recurrence. She fought valiantly, beginning a new series of chemotherapy treatments. Ultimately, she was healed, and entered in glory completely whole and free from sickness and pain. The Lion of Judah roared louder than her disease, and He called her home to heaven. In her final hours this side of heaven, she was surrounded by a chorus of friends and family who prayed for her and her family. She passed from this earthly life very early on Sunday, July 3, surrounded by her family singing, crying, and praying over her.
Susan is survived by her husband of 25 years, Greg; daughters, Elaine and Katherine; parents, Jerry and Mary Lee; her sister, Nancy Lake (Chris); many additional family members; and a myriad of friends who love and will miss her intensely.
Psalm 46:1-3…1 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. 2 Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea, 3 though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble at its swelling.
Romans 8:28…And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.
