He grew up in Ridgeway, Ontario just across the border from Buffalo, NY. He was a tremendous high school football player having played for Notre Dame College School in Welland, Ontario and later actually made the second cut in tryouts for the Hamilton Tiger Cats in the Canadian Football League. After moving to Tallahassee in the 1970’s he became a diehard Florida State Seminoles fan.
Along with his brothers he loved the “Island”, a hunting/fishing camp just north of North Bay, Ontario run by his parents. He spent many weekends and vacations with family and friends and while there spent a lot of time with the Glembus side of the family (his mother’s maiden name). His niece remembers his laugh which boomed around the 5 acre island. He had a love of Canadian butter tarts; a wonderful confection that cannot be equaled in the States. His nephew remembers his willingness to always help and having a pot of coffee ready for him early mornings before he had to go off to work.
His daughter will always remember his goofball personality, which she proudly inherited. To her, dad was always known as “Lazybum”, a joke that lasted decades from a “Take Your Daughter to Work” day experience. He could always brighten any mood with a joke or by just teasing. He brought lots of laughs and joy and was always proud to be called a Grandpa.
Anyone who knew Wayne knew that he loved his yard: gardening, mowing, moving bushes from one side of the yard to the other and then moving it again the following year! He grew many vegetables that the family would pick for their dinner and loved to eat hosed off carrots fresh from the ground. Sitting in the back yard listening to the birds and the pond’s waterfall was a nightly event. He built an oasis for the family to continue to enjoy for many years to come.
He is survived by his wife, Mary, his daughter, Jamie Punke (James), grandson Nathan, of Ankeny, Iowa; son Joseph A. Kacur of Tallahassee; brother Bryan (Diane) of Ridgeway, Ontario; and brother Rick of Latchford, Ontario. He is also survived by his niece, Allison Kacur, nephew Josh Kacur and their mother, Marjie Kacur, all of Ontario, Canada. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Margaret Kacur.
A memorial service will be held at Culley’s MeadowWood Funeral Home and Memorial Park, 700 Timberlane Road, Tallahassee, FL 32312 on Friday, April 23, 2021 at 3 pm.
