Born on October 14, 1940, in Pittsfield, MA, Alfred was the beloved child of Amy and Dr. Alfred J. Ferris, Sr. He grew up in Pittsfield and attended Cranwell Preparatory School, graduating in 1957. His advanced degrees were awarded from Marquette University, where he graduated in 1961 with a Bachelor’s degree in English, and The Medical College of Wisconsin, where he graduated in 1965 with a Medical Degree. This was followed by an internship at The University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital, and two years of service to his country in the U.S. Public Health Service. He returned to The University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital for his residency, which he completed in 1971.
Alfred married Dianne Helen Wunsch on June 5, 1965, in Milwaukee, WI. Together they built a life full of love and mutual respect on Lake Lipsey in Tampa. Their marriage and life included two beautiful children, Eric John and Amy Michelle, to whom they instilled the values of hard work, kindness, optimism, and confidence.
Alfred joined SDI Radiology at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tampa in 1972 where, over a 30-year career, his leadership and innovation helped thrust this prestigious organization into prominence across Tampa. Throughout his career, Alfred guided countless family members and friends through their most challenging medical issues. He was also active in volunteer work, serving on the Board of Directors of Children’s Cancer Center, and was a member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Carrollwood Country Club, and The Tampa Club.
In addition to his professional and community involvement, Alfred enjoyed traveling, golf, literature, politics, and spending time with family. He will be remembered for his tireless energy, wicked sense of humor and love of a good joke, endless curiosity and thirst for knowledge, and passion for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and University of Miami football teams.
Alfred is survived by wife Dianne Ferris, daughter Amy Ferris-Listen and her husband, Kevin Listen and their children Connor, Harrison, Brody, and Avery; daughter-in-law, Jennifer Ferris and her children, Jackson, Carter, and Reagan; brother James Ferris and his wife, Babetta, and their three sons, Paul, Mark, and Jonathan; and nieces Julie Vosit-Stellar, and Amy Vosit-Winston.
