Christine Goldberg Shuman of Land O’ Lakes FL passed away on October 16th, early enough to make it to the biggest Sunday service she’s ever imagined. Originally from Savannah, Georgia, Christine “Chris” Shuman moved to the Tampa Bay area in 1970 with her husband, building contractor Jimmy Shuman (deceased 2002), and their four daughters Pat, Pam, Peggy, and Paula, all of whom still reside in the Bay Area with their families. Chris lived her life in an exemplary manner and happily made the choice every single day to serve others. She served as a mother, a grandmother, a sister, a friend, and an always willing volunteer at countless events and outreaches over the years. She was a lifelong member of The United Methodist Church and a woman of deep and sincere Christian faith, which she passed on through words, action, and love throughout her beautiful life. Christine was industrious and entrepreneurial, having worked in the family construction business, as an owner of a floral shop in Citrus Park, and as the owner of a handmade gift business in South Tampa. Before coming to Florida she founded a salon in Savannah, GA that remains in business today. While she liked to work, and she loved the Church, everyone who knew Christine Shuman would agree that her heart’s deepest love and devotion was for her family and it is there that her greatest legacy can be clearly seen. Her life was a constant string of family activity, very often involving her famous cooking and warm hospitality. She became a grandmother before the age of 40 and a great-grandmother before most people are old enough to retire. She’s known to dozens as simply “Grandma” and her strength and loving presence made an immeasurable impact on every single grandchild and great-grandchild, whether they arrived by birth, by marriage, or any of the many other ways she welcomed young people with open arms into her life. Christine is survived by and will be missed by a large family both locally and across the country including her daughters and sons-in-law Pat & Mike Layton, Pam & Robert Jimenez, Peggy Whiting, and Paula O’ Rourke; grandchildren, Tim & Kim Layton, Andy & Bethany Layton, Julianna & Will Connor, Daphnie Sterner, Kristy & Sean Thomas, Holley Whiting, Eric & Brittany Whiting, Justin Shuman and his fiance Ashlea, Ryan O’Rourke, and Alexa Nicole Catarelli; great-grandchildren AJ, Jacob, Mikala, Kai, Bella, Preston, Kyla, Victoria, Sean Paul, Derick, Miles, Eddie, McKenzie, Tianna, and Grayson. Christine is also survived by brother Donald Goldberg of St. Petersburg, brother Louis Goldberg of Dallas, and sister Doris Wiggins of Savannah, in addition to brothers and sisters-in-law from her marriage of 51 years to Jim Shuman (Papa), with whom she is now reunited in Heaven. Funeral services will be held by Blount & Curry Funeral Home, Carrollwood Chapel, 3207 W. Bearss Avenue, Tampa, FL 33618, on Friday, October 21, 2016, beginning at noon. Interment to follow at Sunset Memory Gardens, 11005 N. US Highway 301, Thonotosassa, Florida.
