Lawrence George Mateka (Larry), died suddenly in Tampa on May 2, 2021, at the age of 74. A loving and devoted husband, he is survived by his wife of 45 years, Candice Dambly Mateka. He was preceded in death by his parents, Marcella and Tone Mateka; his brother,Ralph and his sister, Kathy, all of Daytona Beach.
Larry was born in St. Louis, Missouri on April 24, 1947 and moved to Daytona Beach, Florida with his family in 1951. He graduated from Mainland High School and received an Associate Degree from Daytona Beach Junior College. He was an active member of the Mainland High School Alumni, and an avid viewer of the " I Grew Up in Daytona Beach" Facebook page. Upon graduation, Larry served four years in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War.
A major NASCAR enthusiast, Larry drove the ambulance for the infield hospital during many races at the Daytona International Speedway in the 1970s and 80s. He was also a devoted fan of the Florida Gators and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and followed both teams religiously.
During a career as a retail packaging specialist that spanned more than 50 years, Larry represented manufacturers throughout the southeast. He loved everything about making the deal-discussions, brainstorming, research, innovation and problem solving. He constantly strived to meet the needs of both clients and his manufacturers. Many industry professionals considered Larry one of the few retail packaging specialists left in the country.
His friends described Larry as a great person, constantly ready to help anybody out, always friendly and loyal with a ready grin and his famous infectious laugh.
A Memorial Service will be held at the Blount & Curry Funeral Home- Carrollwood Chapel on Saturday, May 22, 2021 at 12 noon, with a reception immediately following. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Humane Society of Tampa Bay.
