Nathan Scott Sims, age 56, died peacefully at home, on Thursday, August 10, 2023, with his beloved canine companion, Francis ‘Frankie’ Sage, by his side. Scott was born on April 15th, 1967 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, the son of Emmett Earl Sims and Opal Odene Sims and the little brother of Emmett Earl Sims, Jr. Scott grew up in a family of great faith and adopted that as the foundation on which he built his life.
Scott distinguished himself at Johnson High School, being inducted in the National Honor Society and as a Merit Scholar, resulting in receiving a scholarship for leadership to the University of Alabama. Upon graduation he deferred college to enlist in the U.S. Army, deploying to Korea as a Data Telecommunications Center Operator and ended his service as a Corporal at the Oakland Army Base in California. While enlisted Scott received several medals and awards including the M16 Rifle Marksman award.
Scott then continued his education, receiving a B.A. and B.S. degree in Business Administration and Management Information Systems from Alabama, where he also joined his family as an avid fan of the 18-time National Championship winning football team – Go Bama!
This began a lifetime as an avid sports fan, following his Tampa Bay Lightning hockey team on U.S. and Canada road trips, and cheering on his local Bucs and Rays teams. He and his brother regularly attended Bama football games throughout the years, checking off rival SEC stadiums. Scott loved snow skiing and found great joy joining his niece and nephews on the slopes. He was also a huge lover of music of every genre and made it his mission to share great musicians with ‘the kids’, whether it was while driving in the car or attending concerts with those he loved.
On the professional front, Scott utilized his MIS training and skills starting with 6 years at Verizon Data Services and then moving to JP Morgan Chase, where he progressed in responsibility for 21 years and ended his time there as a VP of Treasury and Securities Services. At his passing, his colleague described Scott as a treasured employee and friend.
Family and friends were the number one priority for Scott and he was fiercely loyal and protective of all who made it into his circle; in fact, in recent days each one has recalled at least one time where he instantaneously came to their defense at just the right moment.
He was one of the greatest storytellers, sharing each with his laugh that was so big we will remember it forever, but he was also uniquely gifted as an intent listener and trusted advisor, with a great memory for details and facts - even when you might wish that he would forget!
Scott is survived by his parents, Emmett and Opal; his brother and sister-in-law, Earl and Kelley; his nephews, Korey and Kyle; and niece, Kambria – and friends he loved just like family.
A Celebration of Life will take place on Monday, August 28, 2023 at Creekside Church located at 311 Newberger Rd, Lutz, FL 33549. The service will begin at 10:30am and family will receive friends as they arrive starting at 10am. You can count on hearing Lynyrd Skynyrd’s Simple Man being played at the explicit request. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to K9s for Warriors by clicking the link below under "Donations", an organization Scott felt strongly about.
And in the words of Scott’s favorite sign off – Roll Tide!
