Neil was born July 9, 1939, in Bonifay, Florida. He and his parents, Joe and Rencie Bush, moved to Tampa when he was 6 years old and he was a lifelong resident of Tampa henceforth. He met Betty at the local Winn-Dixie grocery store where they both worked. He married Betty Joan (Moore) June 29, 1958 shortly after both graduated from Hillsborough High School.
After short stints at National Linen and Florida Portland Cement company, he worked a few years for Publix Supermarkets. He then rejoined Florida Portland (later Lafarge after acquisition) in Tampa. Beginning as a general laborer, Neil applied his strong work ethic to first becoming an electrician, then an instrumentation and controls technician. Along the way he was president of the local United Cement, Lime and Gypsum Workers International union and worked to improve the benefits of the labor force at the plant. After being promoted into a management role the latter part of his career, he retired in 2001 after 41 years at the plant.
Following his retirement, Neil was active in the local chapter of the DBSA (Depression, Bipolar Support Alliance) of Tampa Bay and served as its president for 16 years. He worked tirelessly to support state legislation to bring attention and resources to those affected with mental illness, having struggled personally with depression most of his adult life. He helped countless individuals along the way as they dealt with their individual demons, sometimes at a personal toll.
Earlier in his life, Neil enjoyed bass fishing, hunting and camping. He and Betty traveled on many trips and cruises together, many times with dear friends. Among his greatest pleasures was watching his granddaughters, Elicia and Emily, grow up. He especially relished spoiling them through their school years, acting as chauffeur and provider of treats of all kinds.
Neil was a lifelong Christian, of the Baptist tradition, and held many leadership positions over the years in various local churches. Most recently, he and Betty are members at Idlewild Baptist Church where they are part of the Seeker’s Fellowship Class.
Neil is survived by his wife of 67 years, Betty, sons David and his wife Elizabeth of Burnsville, NC and Kenneth and his wife Kim of Tampa; granddaughters Elicia and her husband Uri of Ft Lauderdale, FL, Emily and her husband Cameron of Tampa. He was preceded in death by parents, Joseph and Rencie Bush.
A memorial service to celebrate Neil’s life will be held January 14 at Idlewild Baptist Church. Visitation will be at 10:00 am and the service will be at 11:00 am.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Neil’s memory be made to Lifepath Hospice, Samaritan’s Purse, DBSA of Tampa Bay or the charity of your choosing. Special thanks to the many folks at Lifepath Hospice for their care and compassion during these past months.
